Now that the calendar has turned to May, summer is finally here. College students are graduating (Congrats to our very own Nate Rasmussen), baby birds are hatching, and the Complex Leagues are starting in Florida and Arizona.
These two leagues are some of the best for finding hidden talent, as it's where a majority of Dominican Summer League standouts start their stateside baseball journey as well as the beginning for high school prospects from the previous draft year who maybe don't have the similar hype as the 1st round talents do. You've already been hearing a ton about guys like Emil Morales, Rainiel Rodriguez, Yairo Padilla, etc. Let's look at a few prospects who aren't really on the mainstream radar yet but could really rise up rankings this complex league season.
Honestly, Arizona could've had multiple names at this spot. JD Dix is definitely the most prominent name on this roster and has been getting a ton of buzz lately. Pedro Catuy, Ivan Luciano, and Bo Walker all are really intriguing to me as well, but none of them as much as Cissell. A supreme athlete, Cissell is a switch hitter with sneaky pop and electric speed. Starting with an upright stance, Cissell has fantastic bat speed that thunders thru the zone.

Like another supreme athlete in this class, Konnor Griffin, where Cissell struggles is the approach. In just his first 8 games of complex ball this year, Cissell had a 40% K rate and just one walk. If Cissell can tone down the strikeouts and show an average hit tool, the speed will play. Then it's just a matter of if the power actualizes. A high school 4th rounder typically doesn't come out of the gates screaming, so be patient and see where the development goes over the full season.
Likely the most known prospect on this list, Caminiti surprisingly was assigned to the complex league after debuting in Single-A last season. Already in line to be our #1 Braves prospect after Drake Baldwin and AJ Smith-Shawver come off the list, Caminiti dealt with some injury setbacks this spring which is likely why he didn't return to the Augusta Greenjackets to start this year. Caminiti was the first high school pitcher off the board in 2024, as well as our #1 ranked high school pitcher in our 2024 MLB draft final rankings.
We've barely seen Caminiti in pro ball up to this point, and what we have seen in such a small sample size hasn't necessarily blown our minds yet. However, once Caminiti gets chugging along in the Braves pitching program, he could show us that he does truly deserve that #1 Braves prospect ranking. Armed with a fastball that sits 92-96 mph, a solid changeup and a pair of developing breaking balls in a curve and a slider, Caminiti will need to develop at least one of the breaking balls into a plus pitch to have real success in the upper levels. The Braves are known to fast track their pitching prospects as soon as they think they are viable at the upper levels, so while Caminiti is starting this season in complex, he can go as far as his arm will take him in the next few years.
