The Orioles might not have the best farm system in baseball anymore, and that is okay. They did everything right: They graduated the prospects they wanted to be part of their core and made trades to reinforce their farm system. This leaves a “down” O’s system but it is down for all the right reasons.

This collection of honorable mentions could be labeled a need for speed, as three of the five players are speed-first outfielders. This series highlights a few prospects per team that didn’t make their respective Top 20s and shines some light on a few more prospects. Because, let’s be honest, 20 prospects just aren’t enough to talk about. 

Elis Cuevas

Elis Cuevas was one of the final cuts from my Orioles Top 20 list—honestly, he might have been the most fun prospect for me to dig into. Cuevas plays the game like it’s his last, showcasing dynamic athleticism, the ability to steal a base at will, and solid outfield defense. What ultimately led me to not push too hard to get him on the list—and I say push, but Matt and I rarely disagree—was his lack of discernible power.

A lot of what I’m aiming for here is to spotlight what a prospect needs to do to crack an updated Top 20. It’s pretty straightforward from where I sit for Cuevas: he needs to add muscle to his frame and start driving more batted balls. He’s a slender but athletic player, and while his speed and defense are legitimate, he has to either bulk up or add more loft to his swing to be more than a bench piece.

Cuevas has a strong baseline with good swing decisions, paired with his speed and glove combo. If he can take a step forward in the power department over the next year, he could be a solid second-division regular. If he can push his power from a 40 (where I have him now) to a 45 or 50, he could be in the conversation as a Top 150 prospect by midseason.
