After winning 92 games and finishing second in the division in 2021, the Sox had back-to-back last-place finishes with just 78 wins, but have been steadily climbing out of the basement since then. However, the fact that they can finish third in the division two years in a row despite improving their record by 8 wins says a lot about just how challenging the American League East is. That isn’t going to change anytime soon, but the Sox have the kind of minor league system most organizations in baseball dream of, and that should help them continue to climb. In recent years, they’ve been regarded as one of the best development systems on both sides of the ball, and they're starting to see the fruits of their labor ripen in the big leagues. They do have a few key pieces whose contracts will expire (barring extensions or options being picked up) before 2028 in Alex Bregman, who has already hit free agency this winter, Trevor Story, Lucas Giolito, and Aroldis Chapman, but they should have reinforcements on the way to fill those gaps. On paper, this team could be among the best in baseball by 2028, but the AL Beast will continue to make for some challenging seasons.
