In an action-packed midweek slate, college baseball delivered surprises and shake-ups across the landscape. Middle Tennessee handed Rocky Top its first loss of the season in extra innings, thanks to a clutch home run from Grant Gallagher. Washington fell in an out-of-conference matchup against D3 Pacific Lutheran, proving once again that Division III baseball is no joke. Alabama pushed its win streak to five with late-game heroics against South Alabama on Tuesday, then followed it up with a statement win over Tennessee on Thursday to make it six straight. While Mercer stunned a battle-tested Florida State squad with a commanding 9-3 victory. Meanwhile, Texas endured a brutal week, falling to UTSA in 12 innings before blowing a massive lead in the First Four of the NCAA basketball tournament, losing to X. Liberty took down Wake Forest 11-8, with Ethan Conrad sidelined due to a shoulder injury, leaving the Demon Deacons hopeful for his return in conference play this weekend.
With a challenging stretch of midweek and weekend games now in the books, many draft-eligible players faced their first true test of the season against higher-caliber, pro-projectable talent. These matchups not only impacted individual draft stocks but also reshaped perceptions of teams and their legitimacy as true contenders for Omaha.
Below are four standout draft-eligible performers from last weekend and an update on their current MLB Draft stock.
Once viewed as a utility depth piece with Day 3 draft value on a transfer-heavy Georgia squad, Burnett has completely rewritten his narrative in 2025, emerging as one of the top home run leaders in the country and a driving force behind the Bulldogs' dark horse campaign. His electric start to the season has been nothing short of unreal, making him one of the biggest breakout stories of the year.
Last weekend, Burnett delivered a monster performance in Georgia’s first real test of the season, helping the Dawgs secure a conference series win over Kentucky to open SEC play. He went 8-for-12 with two home runs, nine RBIs, two doubles, and eight runs scored, proving to be a relentless offensive force in the heart of Georgia’s lineup. His torrid pace at the plate has drastically improved his draft stock, and if he continues this level of production against SEC arms, he could rise significantly up draft boards leading into July.
Burnett’s transformation from a role player to a premier power threat stems from refined swing mechanics and a more controlled, disciplined approach at the plate. Previously prone to expanding the zone and selling out for power, Burnett has shown greater patience this season, picking his spots and maximizing damage on mistake pitches. His ability to drive the ball to all fields with plus bat speed and raw pop has made him a legitimate force, and he’s proving he can handle velocity and premium breaking stuff with ease.
I’m not a huge fan of the swing as it’s a low barrel without launch angle tendencies and unsure of the true future value that it’s going to be able to take out more loft in the swing. However, it’s currently working right now as he now is up to 11 home runs on the season, top 5 in the nation.
Defensively, Burnett’s long-term home remains a question, but he has proven to be serviceable at multiple positions. So far this season, he has logged time at all three outfield spots as well as second base, and he has handled each role well, displaying solid instincts and adaptability. His ability to move around the diamond effectively adds another layer of intrigue to his profile, as his versatility could allow him to fill multiple roles at the next level. While he may ultimately settle into a corner outfield or utility role in pro ball, there is still a possibility that he could stick as an up-the-middle defender if he continues to refine his footwork and range.
As the season progresses, scouts will be keeping a close eye on Burnett to see if he can sustain his power production and his bat-to-ball skills against the premier arms of the SEC. If he continues to perform at this level, his stock will only rise further. His combination of versatility, athleticism, and newfound impact at the plate has transformed him from a projected depth piece into one of the most intriguing breakout bats of the 2025 season. Right now, he’s showing clear Day 2 value, with at least three tools (hit, speed, and fielding), grading at major league average or better. If he maintains his current trajectory, he could position himself as a coveted high-floor, high-utility prospect in this year’s draft class.
