With the regular season coming to a close, Saturday's action delivered high-stakes energy and postseason-caliber performances across the college landscape.
Offenses erupted, arms locked in, and several stars delivered their signature moments just in time to shape momentum heading into conference tournament play. Louisville bounced back in a big way behind Eddie King Jr.’s two-homer day and Tague Davis’ record-setting blast, while Georgia Tech clinched a conference title thanks to another standout showing from Drew Burress.
On the mound, Aidan King continued to prove he's one of the most polished freshmen in the country with a strong 6.1-inning effort, and Tomas Valincius delivered his best outing of the season in a playoff-clinching win. From Devin Taylor’s late-season power surge to Myles Bailey’s clutch bat, Saturday made one thing clear, teams and stars alike are turning it up at exactly the right time.
After dropping the first two games of the series, Louisville bounced back in a wild one on Saturday to salvage the finale with a 14–6 win over Wake Forest. Both clubs emptied the bullpen in a game where offense ruled, and no arm seemed to have an answer for the bats.
The Cardinals wasted no time getting on the board, using the long ball to jump out early. Eddie King Jr. opened the scoring with a two-run blast in the first inning, and Tague Davis followed with a two-run homer of his own in the second. King wasn’t done, he added a solo shot in the third for his second home run of the day.
King finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBIs, and four runs scored. Davis’s home run marked his 18th of the season, extending his freshman program record. Zion Rose and Kamau Neighbors chipped in with two hits and two RBIs apiece, helping power the Cardinals to a much-needed win in the series finale.
The Cavaliers are heating up at just the right time, surging toward an NCAA Tournament bid with momentum on their side. In the regular season finale, freshman Tomas Valincius delivered his best outing of the year, tossing 6.2 innings of one-run ball to earn his sixth win of the season.
Valincius struck out six while walking just one, showing command and poise throughout. The only blemish on his line came on the very first batter of the game, a leadoff home run by graduate outfielder Ben Watson. From that point on, the freshman left-hander was in complete control, keeping the Hokies off balance and putting together his longest and most efficient start of the year.
Jacob Ference, C, UVA - 3 AB, 1 R, 3 H, 1 RBI, 1 HR, 2 BB, 0 K
Jacob Ference was the catalyst for the Cavaliers' offense in the series-clinching win, putting together one of his most complete performances of the season. The graduate catcher finished 3-for-3, falling just a triple shy of the cycle, and provided a steady presence both at the plate and behind it.
Ference jumpstarted the offense in the third inning, launching a no-doubt solo shot to left-center (his ninth home run of the season), that snapped a brief lull and pushed UVA’s lead to 3–1. He added a fifth-inning double and a late infield single in the eighth, capping off a perfect day at the plate.
Defensively, Ference was equally impactful. His elite pitch framing helped freshman starter Tomas Valincius earn several key calls, and he cut down a stolen base attempt in the eighth, gunning down Jared Davis at second. Fittingly, Ference sealed the win himself by tracking down a tough fly ball in foul territory for the final out, putting the bow on both a series win and an all-around standout performance.
