Major League Baseball
Covered by Smada
Hayden Birdsong, RHP SF (MLB)
5 IP, 5 H, 1 R (0 ER), 4 K
The future ace has finally found his way back into the rotation! The initial start here was as-advertised. Birdsong cruised through 5 innings on 80 pitches. He maintained the FB shape and velo through the outing sitting 96 mph (topping 98) with 19 in of IVB. While in relief Birdsong typically had heavy usage on two different pitches that changed in each appearance, he worked with all three secondaries at least 19% of the time here. All of them were sharp too with the changeup having the lowest CSW at 27%. Can’t wait to see him fully stretched out.
Ryan Weathers, LHP MIA (MLB)
5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 K
In his second start back from injury, Weathers enjoyed a nearly identical start to Hayden Birdsong, aside from a home run in the 1st inning to Kyle Tucker. We’ve covered Weathers quite a bit and there is a lot to like here, all pending health of course.
Spencer Strider, RHP ATL (MLB)
4.1 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, BB, 3 K
In Strider’s first game back from the IL, the fastball sat 95 mph and he maxed out at 97 flat. He only generated 9 whiffs on the day and got knocked around a little bit. I’ll give him a pass here but I’m slightly concerned that he won’t be the same guy unless he can get the velocity back up.
🚑 Dylan Crews, CF WSN (MLB)
1-for-1, HR, R RBI, BB
Crews got the home run off of Strider, his 7th of the year, then ended up injuring his oblique. He got placed on the IL and Robert Hassell III is getting called up for his first taste of the big leagues.
Brandon Walter, LHP HOU (MLB)
5 IP, 3 H, BB, 5 K
First career big league start and first MLB appearance since 2023 for Walter who had originally come up with the Red Sox. He missed all of 2024 with a shoulder injury and signed an MiLB deal with the Astros this offseason. Walter flashed a 5 pitch mix leading with an 87.4 mph cutter. Other pitches included a 79 mph sweeper, 91.6 mph sinker, 81.2 mph changeup and a 4 seam fastball thrown a handful of times. The lefty only ran the pitch count up to 80 but wasn’t allowed to turn over the lineup for a 3rd time in a 2 run game. He only generated 6 whiffs but he stole some called strikes with the cutter. Stuff+ liked the sweeper but loved the sinker. Walter relies on a control/contact profile to get the job done, this season at Triple-A he’s walked just 5.2% of batters while running an impressive 60% GB. He was optioned down after this start but he’s an interesting deep league streaming option whenever he gets his next opportunity.
‼️ Will Warren, RHP NYY (MLB)
5 IP, 5 H, BB, 10 K
An extremely impressive start here and now a string of 3 very nice games in a row. The Rangers couldn’t take the bat off their shoulders against the fastballs and sinkers. He got 20 combined called strikes with those pitches. Over the last 3 starts he’s struck out 26 batters over 18 IP allowing a total of 3 ER. But the big part is the free passes, just 3 allowed in those starts while running a 11.5% BB in the starts prior.
‼️ Logan Henderson, LHP MIL (MLB)
5 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 K
Is Henderson finally here to stay? He’s been dominant in his first 3 career starts with a 32.2% K-BB. The pitch mix is kind of wild. He threw 39 fastballs, 39 changeups, 9 cutters and 3 sliders generating 20 whiffs. I wasn’t confident that it was all going to work in the bigs but I’ve been proved wrong thus far. It’s clear the changeup is pretty special and the fastball has enough velo and ride to get whiffs and pair well with the offspeed. Everything is in the air, but not a problem if they are not leaving the yard.
Riley Greene, DH DET (MLB)
3-for-4, HR, R, 4 RBI
After having a rough patch early in the season, Greene has been on fire over his last 100 PA with 9 HR and a 217 wRC+. The walks are still down but we’ll trade that for a 17% barrel all day.
Nick Kurtz, 1B SAC (MLB)
2-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI
Kurtz got his 2nd HR of the year in this one, an oppo shot off of Kyle Hendricks. The contact rates are beginning to come up and over the last 15 games he’s had a 9.8% BB and 27.9% K. He’s learning on the job, give him some patience.
‼️ Yoshinobu Yamamoto, RHP LAD (MLB)
7 IP, H, 2 BB, 9 K
Yoshi continues to dominate with his 4th game of the season with at least 9 K. Please stay healthy!
Triple-A
Covered by Nate Rasmussen
🆕 Christian Moore, 2B LAA (Triple-A)
3-for-4, 2 RBI, BB, K
Christian Moore made his Triple-A debut on Tuesday and looked as advertised. I would expect Moore to be up in the big leagues in the next few months due to the Angels not caring about minor league development. We’ve seen it work with Zach Neto, but we’ve also seen it stunt tool development with Nolan Schanuel. It’ll be interesting to see which category Moore fits into, with myself seeing him as just an average big leaguer in the long-term.
Dominic Canzone, CF SEA (Triple-A)
2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI
Dominic Canzone is a Triple-A killer, but has struggled in the MLB over multiple stints throughout his career. The strikeout numbers have consistently been a problem for Canzone, who has too much swing and miss to be a viable everyday guy in the major leagues.
Jimmy Crooks, C STL (Triple-A)
2-for-4, R, RBI, K
I am one of the biggest Jimmy Crooks guys out there, and the glove is really good, but Jimmy gave up 5 steals today, which has been a consistent problem for Crooks all year behind the dish. Previously, Crooks had thrown out an incredible % of SB attempts, but this year that number has significantly decreased and teams are starting to take note. While there are certainly more important parts of a catcher’s game, Jimmy needs to iron some things out before getting his call to the MLB.
Colson Montgomery, SS CHW (Triple-A)
3-for-4, R, K
Since coming back from the complex, Colson Montgomery has a hit in all of his games but one, with half of those being multi-hit performances. After a rough 2024, Montgomery reach rock bottom in 2025 seemingly looking lost at the plate. He was sent down to the complex league to work on some things, which is a move that has rarely paid dividends throughout history. In his first week back in Triple-A, Colson looks more like his old self which could result in his eventual promotion to the MLB. At this point we’re in ‘let’s just see what we’ve got’ mode with Colson Montgomery. I wouldn’t mind putting in some buys or bids on Colson after his recent resurgence.
🍔🍟👟 Marcus Smith, RF TEX (Triple-A)
3-for-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, K, 2 SB
Marcus Smith absolutely filled up the stat sheet from the 9-hole today. Smith is a defense first guy with good athleticism, as seen by the two steals today. Smith strikes out far too much to ever get a real chance in the major leagues, but a defender and runner like him could get a chance in a pinch.
🔜 Ronald Acuna Jr., DH ATL (Triple-A)
1-for-2
This Ronald Acuna Jr. guy is a prospect to keep an eye on.
Roman Anthony, LF BOS (Triple-A)
1-for-3, HR, 2 R, 2 BB, K
I would also keep an eye on this Roman Anthony kid, looks like he might be a good prospect.
Ronny Mauricio, 3B NYM (Triple-A)
3-for-5, HR, 2B, 2 RBI
Ronny Mauricio missed all of 2024 with an ACL, and is about 40 PA’s into his 2025 comeback season thus far. In 2023 Mauricio got a 100 PA sample size in the big leagues, and did not perform great but showed enough to remain an option for the Mets future. After the ACL injury, Mauricio will need to prove he can still play a good infield to remain valuable for a win-now Mets team.
Robert Hassell III, CF WAS (Triple-A)
3-for-4, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI
After this game, Robert Hassell III was promoted to the MLB! Hassell was a 2020 draftee, which removes him from ‘draft bust’ territory in my eyes due to COVID scouting troubles. Hassell plays a good outfield but doesn’t have any defining traits. He will likely make a good 4th outfielder for Washington in the meantime while they see if he can be another post-hype breakout.
🆕 Jhostynxon Garcia, CF BOS (Triple-A)
1-for-4, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, K
In the password’s first game in Triple-A today, he went big fly. I thought his promotion to Triple-A was a tad bit aggressive, but Jhostynxon will get plenty of time to develop in Triple-A against good pitching while the Red Sox try and figure out how to manage their prospect depth.
🍔🍟 Otto Kemp, 2B PHI (Triple-A)
2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB, K, SB
Otto Kemp is somehow still hanging around in Triple-A, despite multiple Phillies starters underperforming with the bat. Kemp will either be in the big leagues or traded by the deadline, as there is no reason to keep him in Triple-A any longer. Today Kemp showed off his wheels alongside his power, with a 20/20 season being within range if Kemp ever gets a full season in the big leagues. I don’t imagine Kemp will ever be a superstar, but he has desirable traits alongside some positional versatility. If the Phillies stick with Bohm for the rest of the year, look for Kemp to get traded to a rebuilding team.
