Minor leagues off yesterday, so just MLB and Complex coverage with Smada and Alex Jensen covering the respective levels

Major League Baseball

Covered by Smada

Shohei Ohtani, RHP-DH LAD (MLB)

Pitching: IP, 2 H, ER
Hitting: 2-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, 2 K

This is the first time Ohtani has graced the mound since we began doing MLB writeups for the Daily Sheet. While I’m fully aware of what he’s done as a two-way player I was re-amazed by the fact that Ohtani was reaching back for 100 mph, while in the same game, registering multiple hits that scored baserunners. He’s the best baseball player to ever live and we should do our best to appreciate what we get to watch.

Max Kepler, LF-RF PHI (MLB)

1-for-4, HR, R, RBI, K

Kepler has been pretty average across the board, when healthy, over the last year and a half. He’ll need to turn it on if he wants a contract in 2026. That said, he's pretty cheap strong-side power which has some value in deep leagues.

Mick Abel, RHP PHI (MLB)

5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, BB, 3 K

Abel has yet to give up more than 3 ER in a start through his first 4 games but he’s been lucky with a 4.74 xERA and 4.05 FIP. It’s still curious to me that he’s been able to keep the walks to a minimum. If he gives much of that back it could get ugly. Now is probably the selling opportunity, but I’m likely to be much more interested for 2026.

Sandy Alcantara, RHP MIA (MLB)

5 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, BB, 5 K, 2 HR allowed

It’s just been 3 starts but Alcanatara has worked up that trade value again with just 4 ER, 15 K, 3 BB over 17 IP.

Kyle Stowers, LF-CF-RF MIA (MLB)

1-for-4, 3B, R, K

The sell window is likely closed unless you run into an owner that doesn’t look past the season sine. The triple slash of .236/.292/.303, lacking a HR over the last 96 PA is glaring. He’s sat against a couple LHP recently but hasn’t moved into a full platoon yet..

💣💣 Hunter Goodman, C COL (MLB)

2-for-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI

Goodman’s Double Dong gives him 13 HR on the season. Since May 1st he’s had a 2.3% BB and 27.7% K with a .372 BABIP inflating the overall line. The fantasy profile is power only and the BA will come down but the catcher position boosts him. Not my preferred choice but certainly worse options out there this season.

Daylen Lile, RF WSN (MLB)

1-for-3, HR, R, RBI

Lile came back after a week in Triple-A and hit his first career HR lefty-lefty off of Carson Palmquist. In his first 11 game stint the slash line wasn’t inspiring but he did get 4 XBH and displayed really solid contact. There is some sneaky role-player upside here. We’ve written about him quite a bit this year if you want to learn more.

‼️ Jose Soriano, RHP LAA (MLB)

7 IP, 6 H, BB, 6 K

Kudos if you trusted Soriano in this two-start week. He’s now gone back to back 7 IP games with 1 ER or less after his worst start of the season. He continues to be a pitcher you can plug in and trust that by the end of the year the ERA should end up fine with plenty of opportunities for wins and QS. Improvements in the walk rate would push him into another category, but that’s yet to be seen consistently.

‼️ Clarke Schmidt, RHP NYY (MLB)

7.2 IP, 4 H, 3 K

Schmidt’s last month has been very solid with 6 starts with half of them scoreless outings. This is only the second time he’s completed 7 innings in his career and 6 of his 13 starts of 6 IP or more have come this season. If you’ve ever liked Schmidt, you should like him a lot more now.

Christian Moore, 2B LAA (MLB)

1-for-4, 3B, R

Moore’s first career hit is a triple and came in his 3rd start. It’s only been 11 PA but the whiffs have been very high. Contact and defense were the main concerns but he did make a great play to get a runner at home to preserve the lead in the 11th. It wouldn’t surprise me if he ends up back in Triple-A for more seasoning at some point.

Giancarlo Stanton, DH NYY (MLB)

2-for-4, 2B, K

Stanton made his season debut and showed off the elite exit velo right away. There is quite the crowd now in New York. Goldschmidt got the day off with Ben Rice at 1B and Jasson Dominguez was on the bench with Grisham in CF. Rice and Jasson are most likely to lose out on PA moving forward as they work Stanton in at DH.

‼️ Ryan Pepiot, RHP TB (MLB)

8 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 11 K

Have a game Ryan Pepiot! This was his first time completing 8 innings and his third time in 51 career games started with double digit Ks. He’s continued to build of last season and has worked in the zone a lot more than last season. We don’t love the home park but he’s still managed to limit damage and outperform the ERA estimators.

‼️ Lucas Giolito, RHP BOS (MLB)

6 IP, 3 H, BB, 10 K

What year is it?! Giolito ramped the FB up a tick and dominated with it to the tune of a 47% CSW. That’s back to back 6 IP, 0 ER games and the first time with double digit Ks this season. He either looks great or gets blown up. It’s a bummer that it’s impossible to know when the blow ups will come.

Roman Anthony, RF BOS (MLB)

1-for-4, HR, R, RBI

Career HR #1 for Roman Anthony was a well struck pulled shot off of Logan Gilbert. Through his first 7 games he’s only managed 2 hits but shown solid contact.

Logan Gilbert, RHP SEA (MLB)

5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, BB, 10 K

In Gilbert’s first game back from the IL he worked through 5 innings on just 84 pitches racking up 10 K. Everything looked sharp and he cruised outside the mistake to Anthony (and I’m not sure it was really a mistake).

Nick Kurtz, 1B SAC (MLB)

1-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI

Remember when people were worried about Kurtz hitting? Well his season line is up to a 104 wRC+ in 133 PA. Over the last 10 games, which includes an IL stay in the middle of it, he’s hit 5 HR.

Complex Leagues

Covered by Alex Jensen

Kevin Garcia, C MIL (CPX)

2-for-5, HR

The 17-year-old has a 37.7% k rate that won’t play but the power and defense are legit. He could become interesting if the contact improves.

Gabriel Rodriguez, 2B CLE (CPX)

1-for-2, 2 BB, SB

G-Rod continues to be one of the more underrated prospects at the level and has a real shot to be a regular if development goes well.

Jhonny Level, SS SFG (CPX)

2-for-4, HR

I knew Jhonny was good, but he appears to have unlocked another Level…get it? Future top 100 prospect if he continues on his trajectory.

Francisco Espinoza, C LAD (CPX)

3-for-4, 3B, BB

Espinoza has caught 2 of 23 base-stealers…that’s not good. Literally everything else is good. Espinoza is slashing .448/.536/.690 with a .241 ISO, 15.9% BB rate to just an 11.6% K rate, has a 29.2% LD rate, goes with pitches, isn’t overly passive at the plate but maintains just an 8.2% SWSTR rate…this looks like one of the more polished hitters at the level,

Emil Morales, SS LAD (CPX)

2-for-4, BB, K, SB

The question with Morales continues to be, how much will he hit? If he can be a 40 hitter, he’s a pro, likely every day. The power is huge and he’s a great athlete. The concern is, he’s looking closer to a 30 hitter right now with a ton of swing and miss.

Johnny King, LHP TOR (CPX)

4 IP, ER, 2 H, BB, 6 K

King looks like a (near) future top 100 prospect if he can stay healthy. It’s big stuff with solid command from the left-hand side.

Jesus Travieso, RHP BOS (CPX)

5 IP, H, 3 BB, 5 K

I don’t know a ton about Travieso, but I know he’s been one of the most dominant pitchers at the level since the start of June. It looks like there is legit swing and miss stuff here, but with well below average command. Boston has done well with that profile.

Francisco Pazos, RHP SEA (CPX)

5 IP, ER, 5 H, 5 K

Pazos, a short, stout 5’9 righty from Mexico has been generating some whiffs while maintaining a near 70% GB rate in his second complex league go around. Not relevant yet, but there’s some intrigue here.
