Major League Baseball
by Will Thompson
💣💣Byron Buxton, CF MIN (MLB)
3-for-6, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, K
Buxton has been ripping the cover off the ball over the last two weeks and that continued with a double dong day yesterday in the Twins win over the Reds. He’s stayed mostly healthy this season outside of a two week IL stint and honestly this might be the best season of his career so far.
💣💣James Wood, LF WAS (MLB)
2-for-5, 2 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI
The Nats were on an 11-game losing streak going into this game and James Wood got tired of relying on his teammates and simply said “alright screw you guys I’ll just do it all myself.” A double dong day and a walk-off home run for the star outfielder, who accounted for all four of his team’s runs to break the slide. But when you really think about it, if James Wood won the game by himself, are the rest of the Nats still on a losing streak? So many questions and so few answers.
Paul Goldschmidt, 1B NYY (MLB)
2-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, RBI, 2 K
It’s very simple: Paul Goldschmidt see lefty, Paul Goldschmidt smash lefty. The 37-year-old has come back down to earth after a ridiculous start, but he’s still hitting .425/.512/.740 with 5 HR and more walks than strikeouts against LHP this season. He has to be the best short side of the platoon in the majors but he’s lost a bit of playing time with Giancarlo Stanton back for New York which limits his fantasy value.
💣💣Jac Caglianone, RF KC (MLB)
2-for-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI
A double dong day for Cags, who hit his first two big league homers in this game. His first homer was absurd, somehow pulling a line drive out to right-center on a pitch that was at his neck. It’s insane how talented you have to be to pull a pitch that high out of the ballpark and follow it up with a 430 foot homer later in the game. Caglianone has gotten off to a bit of a slow start, but once he starts lifting the ball more consistently he’s going to be a monster.
‼️Michael Wacha, RHP KC (MLB)
6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Michael Wacha doesn’t get near the love he deserves as one of the most consistently good pitchers in baseball. Don’t believe me? Here is how his last four seasons have gone:
2022 (Red Sox): 3.32 ERA 4.14 FIP
2023 (Padres): 3.22 ERA 3.89 FIP
2024 (Royals): 3.35 ERA 3.65 FIP
2025 (Royals): 3.24 ERA 3.78 FIP
Now THAT is some consistency and the Royals made an excellent move extending him through 2028 on a three-year $51 million deal which is a bargain for a guy like this.
Eugenio Suarez, 3B ARI (MLB)
3-for-5, HR, 2B, R, 4 RBI, K
Suarez is on pace for a 40-homer season and is a piece to look out for at the deadline. Arizona is in that weird in-between spot where they’ll be competing for one of the last wild card spots but probably don’t have a chance of real contention this year. Suarez is an impending free agent so I think the D'Backs would be wise to move him and turn 3B over to Jordan Lawlar for an actual look. Watch for the Yankees as a potential landing spot here.
‼️Ryne Nelson, RHP ARI (MLB)
5.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, HR allowed
Finally, a Diamondbacks starting pitcher not named Merrill Kelly that stepped up. Nelson has had a pretty smooth transition into the starting rotation after starting the season in the bullpen, but his K rate has decreased significantly since becoming a starter. He’s a serviceable number four or five starter though and Arizona needs any stability they can get.
💣💣Alejandro Kirk, C TOR (MLB)
3-for-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 3 RBI
Kirk has had a fantastic season so far, hitting .313/.354/.442 with 7 HR in 61 games. It’s easily been the best year of his career at the plate and his defense is excellent as well. The breakout seems to be legit as well given Kirk’s 55.7% hard-hit rate and 10% barrel rate, both career highs by a mile. The Blue Jays gave Kirk a five-year $58 million extension before the season and it’s looking like a bargain to say the least.
‼️Cristopher Sanchez, LHP PHI (MLB)
8.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K
The Phillies rotation is awesome because of how well the middle and the back of the rotation performs and how consistent they are. Sanchez is one of those guys and he’s had his best season as a big leaguer so far in 2025. No longer just a pitch to contact sinkerballer, the lefty’s changeup has been unhittable this season with hitters batting just .129 against it with a 45% whiff rate.
‼️Edward Cabrera, RHP MIA (MLB)
6.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Is Edward Cabrera finally turning the corner for the Marlins? The 27-year-old has been terrific over his last five starts, posting a 1.46 ERA and a 2.74 FIP in that span. Cabrera has changed his pitch usage quite a bit this season, leaning heavily on the sinker instead of his normal four-seamer. More importantly, he’s throwing strikes now which has plagued him throughout his career. He’s worth keeping an eye on to see if he can sustain this run and be a part of the future Marlins rotation.
‼️Spencer Strider, RHP ATL (MLB)
6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K
After a brutal start to the season after coming back from Tommy John, Strider has hit his….well stride over his last two starts, striking out 21 batters while walking just two. This was a far cry from his initial starts off the IL, where he struggled to miss bats. The velocity isn’t back to what it was pre-TJS yet, but it’s improving as well.
Victor Caratini, C HOU (MLB)
1-for-4, HR, R, 3 RBI, 3 K
Victor Caratini doesn’t hit home runs very often, but when he does, he prefers them to be three-run homers in huge spots. Caratini hit a three-run homer for the second consecutive night, hitting the game-tying blast off Mason Miller who was in to try and get a four-out save. Unfortunately for Caratini and the Astros, their late-game rally was overshadowed by the next player I’ll highlight.
Nick Kurtz, 1B SAC (MLB)
1-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Nick Kurtz is so good and just lives for the moment man. For the second time this week, the rookie launched a walk-off home run and this one came off Astros closer Josh Hader. I’d say if you’re hitting left on left bombs off Hader as a rookie, that’s probably a pretty good indication you’re going to be a stud. Kurtz has a 124 wRC+ now after a slow start and it’s entirely possible that the A’s could end up with both the first and second place finishers in AL ROY voting.
Xander Bogaerts, SS SD (MLB)
4-for-4, HR, 2B, 3 R, RBI
I saw somewhere on X yesterday that Xander Bogaerts is a DFA candidate right now and he has 8.5 years left on his contract. I wouldn’t go that far, but Bogaerts has had a brutal season to this point and really needed a big game like this. This contract will be up there with the worst contracts in baseball history when it’s all set and done though.
‼️Ryan Bergert, RHP SD (MLB)
4.2 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Bergert faced the biggest test of his career so far and passed with flying colors, shutting down the Dodgers over 4.2 scoreless innings on the way to a Padres win. He now has a 1.88 ERA for the season and while it won’t stay that low, he’s been a massive help for San Diego given their injuries in the starting rotation. Bergert is mostly a two-pitch guy so I’m not sure if he has the stuff to get through lineups more than two times, but he’s a perfect bulk reliever or No. 5 starter type.
‼️Michael McGreevy, RHP STL (MLB)
Game Two: 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, HR allowed
One of these days, Michael McGreevy will get a chance to stick in the Cardinals rotation because any time he gets the opportunity to start, he shines. St. Louis is paying too much money to Miles Mikolas to take him out of the rotation and he’s been decent enough, but I definitely think McGreevy is deserving of a rotation spot over Andre Pallante. I hope he gets that chance soon.
Andre Granillo, RHP STL (MLB)
Game One: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, W
Game Two: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, SV
Granillo appeared in Nate Rasmussen’s Dynasty Closer Hierarchy just 10 days ago and since then he’s gotten called up to the big leagues and picked up both his first career win and first career save in yesterday’s doubleheader against the White Sox. Nate wrote that “Granillo has both the velocity and stuff to be in a big league bullpen now, and should get the chance with the Cardinals here soon. Look for him to be the next high-profile reliever to get the call, similar to Luis Mey.” Per Elias, this is the first time in MLB history that someone has gotten their first career win and save in the same day and you gotta think the one-man list of Andre Granillo for that might stand for a long time.
Triple-A Baseball
by Rhys White
💣💣Chase DeLauter, LF CLE (Triple-A)
Game One: 2-for-4, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB
Game Two: 1-for-4, HR, R, 2 RBI
How long until he graduates? How long will he stay healthy? How do I even rank him? These are the questions I ask myself with DeLauter. I was talking with Drew and at this point ranking DeLauter is a pain. I am just going to rank him in a spot and then drop him 50 spots. The guy hasn’t been able to stay on the field, and the biggest predictor of future injuries is past injuries. When healthy he can do stuff like this, but how often do we get a chance to see this?
🔜Jeimer Candelario, 3B CIN (Triple-A)
2-for-4, RBI
He should be up any day now to help provide a league average bat for the Reds and our fantasy rosters. We could be freed from Christian Ercanacion-Strand at third-base.
‼️Cam Schlittler, RHP NYY (Triple-A)
5 IP, 6 H, 2 R (2 ER), BB, 9 K
Schlittler is one of my personal favorites, and he could very well help the Yankees' rotation, and maybe their offense, if you have seen the way they are going. The fastball plays well at the top of the zone, and he mixes in a good slider that has quickly become the pitch he throws most often. He gets well-above-average chase rates with his slider. Watch him pitch; it’s a lot of arms and legs coming at you. He might be a back-end of a top 100 type arm for me.
Noah Schultz, LHP CWS (Triple-A)
5.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R (6 ER), BB, 5 K, HR Allowed
I am just not a Noah Schultz guy; I don’t see the top pitching prospect upside. He is comfortably behind Chase Burns, Bubba Chandler, and Andrew Painter. I have been stewing on the idea that Schultz is just a touch overrated. The slider looked good in this one, but I have questions about how everything plays at the next level. He could suffer from some Jackson Jobeitis, where the stuff is good, but it plays down because of deception, and hitters are able to pick it up out of the hand.
Moises Ballesteros, DH CHC (Triple-A)
3-for-5, HR, R, 2 RBI
Now that Carson Kelly isn't the hottest hitter on the face of the planet, maybe we could see more Moises? Maybe, please! Ballesteros has nothing left to prove in the minor leagues. There is a very real chance we are talking about a 60-hit, 55-power bat at the end of the day, and if that is the case, he should be up right now.
Chandler Simpson, CF TB (Triple-A)
2-for-5, 2B, R, RBI, SB
An empty base hates to see Chandler Simpson on deck. His elite speed is a game-changer, but if he can’t play a good defensive centerfield, then there are limited avenues for him to impact a big league squad.
Joe Boyle RHP TB (Triple-A)
5 Ip, 5 H, 3 R (3 ER), BB, 8 K, 2 HR Allowed
I see everyone saying he is fixed, and that is true to an extent, but if the Rays believed in him, he would be up with the big league squad, or so you would think. The Rays' rotation is pretty good, so I can understand keeping him down. I still think he struggles with control at points, and that makes me worry about the consistency with Boyle. The high-octane stuff, when it is on, is pretty awesome to watch.
Double-A
by Matt Thompson
Tommy Troy, DH ARI (Double-A)
2-for-4, 2B, R
Troy was once thought of as a potential quick mover through the Arizona system, but here we are and injuries have slowed the 2023 draftee to just Double-A so far. He’s given up playing shortstop which seemed like it was going to happen even from his Stanford days, but he can hit. Troy has all fields power, especially when pitches are elevated, and he absolutely hammers fastballs. Seems like a solid future big league second baseman.
