Major League Baseball
Covered by Will Thompson
Walker Buehler, RHP BOS (MLB)
4.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 2 HR allowed
This year has turned into a full-on disaster for Walker Buehler and his time in the Red Sox rotation is probably running out with Tanner Houck and Kyle Harrison figuring to get back to the bigs pretty soon. It’s to the point where he likely needs a change of scenery, but the Red Sox should move him to the bullpen to see if there’s anything there rather than DFA someone who is getting paid $20 million this year. I don’t think the stuff is that bad, but the command is horrific. He can’t hit a spot and all of his breaking pitches either hang or are non-competitive and easy to lay off. Houck and Harrison probably need another start or two in Worcester, but that’s just delaying the inevitable with Buehler.
‼️Ranger Suarez, LHP PHI (MLB)
7.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, HR allowed
Suarez got a late start to the season, but he’s been brilliant for the Phillies and his ERA is down to just 2.00. He’s done an exceptional job of pounding the zone and avoiding hard contact. The lefty is allowing a 27% hard-hit rate against him which is in the 99th percentile in baseball.
Luis Severino, RHP SAC (MLB)
3.2 IP, 5 H, 7 R (6 ER), 3 BB, 3 K, 2 HR allowed
Well the largest FA contract in A’s history is not working out so well. Severino hasn’t been able to miss any bats this season and in a year where his home and road splits have been staggering, the righty got lit up at Yankee Stadium. Severino’s chase rate is the lowest of his career and hitters are hammering the fastball, sinker, and cutter. The A’s are going to keep rolling him out there but this contract is going to turn into a mess.
💣💣 Aaron Judge, DH NYY (MLB)
2-for-4, 2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB, 2 K
Judge has cooled down a bit lately, but a double dong day is more like it. Cal Raleigh deserves all the love he’s been getting, but Judge is still my AL MVP and I feel a lot more confident in him sustaining his performance in the second half than Raleigh. That’s no shot at Raleigh, but he’s caught the most innings in baseball this season so I’m thinking the power pace will slow down at some point.
Jazz Chisholm Jr, 3B NYY (MLB)
2-for-4, HR, 3B, 2 R, 4 RBI, BB, K
In 99 games in a Yankees uniform, Jazz Chisholm is hitting .257/.331/.497 with 24 HR which is roughly a 39 homer pace over a full season. He’s also hitting the ball in the air way more this year, with his FB rate jumping to 52% when his previous career high was 40%. That comes with some more swing and miss, but at Yankee Stadium it’s absolutely worth the trade-off for a LHH. Staying healthy is the key, but Jazz is a really good player.
Xander Bogaerts, SS SD (MLB)
3-for-4, HR, 2 2B, R, RBI
Bogaerts doesn’t hit for much power anymore but when he does it usually comes in bunches. He hasn’t been able to string these types of games together anymore though and there’s still eight years left on his contract after this season.
‼️Framber Valdez, LHP HOU (MLB)
6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 6 K
Valdez is awesome and is going to get paid so much money in free agency this winter. The Astros probably won’t be willing to pay the money necessary to bring him back, but they’re a machine and have a new ace in Hunter Brown now so they’ll be fine.
Justin Wrobleski, LHP LAD (MLB)
6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Well the Dodgers have done it again, turning an 11th round pick in 2021 into a future big league starter. The Dodgers have had so many injuries in their starting rotation (or following an opener) but Wrobleski has helped keep them afloat. He’s a lefty sinkerballer who throws strikes and has a 50% GB rate this season. I’m not sure where or how he can fit into the Dodgers rotation at full strength, but he’s at least a multi-inning reliever for them down the stretch.
💣💣Oneil Cruz, CF PIT (MLB)
2-for-4, 2 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 K
Ah the perfect Oneil Cruz line. A double dong day for Cruz, whose first homer was 112 off the bat and got to the RF seats in a hurry. You know what you’re going to get from him, he hits absolute missiles when he makes contact but he doesn’t make contact often. Cruz has gotten more selective at the plate this year, but still is mostly a three true outcomes bat who is a major stolen base threat when he does get on.
Bryan Reynolds, RF PIT (MLB)
2-for-4, HR, 2 R, RBI
It took a while, but Bryan Reynolds’ luck has finally started to turn at the plate. He went 13-for-31 at the plate this week with six doubles and two homers. The difference between his actual numbers and expected stats are outrageous.
Even looking beyond the expected numbers, he’s got a 50% hard-hit rate as well. This week is not a one-off case, I think Reynolds is going to go on an extended run here soon.
Henry Davis, C PIT (MLB)
4-for-4, 2B, 2 R
Three Pirates big league hitters written up in the Daily Sheet? Davis has had another tough year, but he’s sure trying things. If he qualified, he would have the highest average launch angle in the big leagues at 26.6 degrees (no that is not a typo). He’s trying to reinvent himself as a total pull and lift guy which isn’t a bad idea given his big league struggles. I’m at least intrigued to see if he improves as the season goes along with it.
‼️Dean Kremer, RHP BAL (MLB)
7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
Kremer had a brutal start to the season like most of the other Orioles pitchers, but it has started to turn over his last four starts. In that span, he’s posted a 2.19 ERA and 2.84 FIP, bringing his season numbers a lot closer to his peripherals. Kremer isn’t great, but he’s worth an add in deeper leagues.
Kyle Teel, C CHW (MLB)
3-for-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI
I thought rookies were supposed to struggle for a while after getting called up to the big leagues for the first time? Not Kyle Teel, who is hitting .319/.421/.404 in his first 16 games. That comes infused by a .469 BABIP which will obviously come down, but he is consistently making hard contact and doesn’t chase the way most rookies do. Teel plays a very mature game for someone his age and he’s going to have a really nice career.
Orlando Arcia, SS COL (MLB)
1-for-4, HR, R, RBI, K
Arcia tied the game in Milwaukee with a solo shot with two outs in the ninth against Trevor Megill which led to the Rockies grabbing a win in extras. Arcia has had a miserable year at the plate with the Braves and Rockies, but a clutch swing like that deserves some love.
James Wood, LF WAS (MLB)
1-for-2, 4 BB
Any time you’re the first person to do something since Barry Bonds, you’re probably doing something right. Wood was walked intentionally four times in this game, marking the first to do so since Bonds. Two things can be true here: That’s major respect to James Wood and how awesome of a hitter he is but also utter disrespect to how opponents view the rest of the Nationals lineup. The Angels are the first team to do this, but I doubt they will be the last.
🚑 Kerry Carpenter, RF DET (MLB)
2-for-3, HR, 3B, R, 2 RBI
Carpenter has been playing through a hamstring injury for a bit now and had to leave the game after hobbling around the bases for a triple in the 5th. He was having an awesome game before that, but the Tigers have such a big lead in the AL Central that they should really take it easy with Carpenter here. He’s too important of a piece to their lineup.
‼️ Tarik Skubal, LHP DET (MLB)
7.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 13 K
I mean what else can you say other than he’s the best pitcher on the planet. Skubal shined on the national stage against the Twins, generating 22 whiffs at a 47% overall rate! The changeup once again was unhittable when you have to also prepare for a 100 MPH fastball. He’s a magician out there and getting to see him on the Sunday Night Baseball stage was a real treat.
Triple-A
Covered by Nate Rasmussen
Shay Whitcomb, 3B HOU (Triple-A)
1-for-4, 3 K
I don’t care about the stat line here, I want to use this moment to say Free Shay. Get him on the Rockies ASAP and let him struggle at the big league level. There is a good play in Whitcomb, but it won’t happen in Houston. My BFF, Will Thompson, believes in Shay Whitcomb, so I do too.
💣💣Dustin Harris, RF TEX (Triple-A)
3-for-5, 2 HR, 3 R, 4 RBI, 2 K
Dustin Harris filled up the scorebook yesterday with a big double dong while driving in four runs. Harris played in 16 MLB games this year and is currently the swing man on the Rangers roster, which is a perfectly fine life for a guy like Harris.
‼️Joe Boyle, RHP TB (Triple-A)
5 IP, 2 H, ER, 3 BB, 8 K
I think it’s likely that the Rays make some moves at the deadline to open up a starting spot for Boyle in their rotation. This is not a World Series year for a young Rays team, and they should give their high upside guys some run in the second half. After seeing what Misiorowski has been able to do, the Rays should feel confident that they have 80% of that at home in Joe Boyle.
💣💣Colson Montgomery, SS CHW (Triple-A)
2-for-4, 2 HR
Colson Montgomery is the most interesting man in the world. After spending time in the complex earlier this year, Montgomery has honestly looked good again. The strikeouts are inflated, but they’ve been getting better, and the power has been available once again in full force for Colson. I have zero expectations for him, but I wouldn’t be shocked if he spends most of August and September in Chicago.
💣💣Edwin Rios, DH CIN (Triple-A)
3-for-5, 2 HR, 2B, 3 R, 5 RBI, K
Everyone gets a double dong shoutout, even 31-year-old Edwin Rios.
‼️Hunter Barco, LHP PIT (Triple-A)
6 IP, H, ER, 7 K, HR Allowed
Hunter Barco is a fascinating prospect who is the next high-potential starter in the Pirates' farm system. There are far too many prospects in the mix right now, with the Pirates likely needing to deal from their young pitching to acquire young hitters at some point in the next year. With Mitch Keller and Andrew Heaney on the move, there will be spots opening up soon that Barco could grab before some of his teammates.
💣💣Vimael Machín, 1B BAL (Triple-A)
2-for-4, 2 HR
Vimael Machin is a name I didn’t expect to write about ever, but he had a double dong today and is playing well for Baltimore this year. He’s approaching 32, and Machin will be hard-pressed to get another big league opportunity.
🍔🍟Spencer Jones, LF NYY (Triple-A)
2-for-4, HR, K, SB
Spencer Jones is back. The power is translating; the only real issue is how he fits into a big league roster that is in World Series mode. There is a certainty that Jones will struggle against MLB pitchers while providing home run power when he makes contact. In my opinion, that’s a really hard player to roster, so maybe we see Jones get dealt at the deadline for MLB-ready reinforcements? I think Jones is worth more to New York than any other team, so maybe he just finishes the year out in Triple-A while getting a shot early next year.
Double-A
Covered by Nate Rasmussen
LuJames Groover, 3B AZ (Double-A)
2-for-5, R, 2 RBI
Groover was recently announced as a future game participant, which I am totally here for. LuJames has a really balanced profile that will continue to translate as he advances. He is one of the safest Arizona prospects right now.
💣💣Zach Cole, CF HOU (Double-A)
3-for-4, 2 HR, 4 R, 4 RBI, BB, K
Double Dong Sunday for Zach Cole, who strikes out at nearly a 40% clip. The power needs to continue to tick up for Cole to have a chance at being a big leaguer. As you can imagine, the whiff and chase are pretty rough for Cole.
‼️Connelly Early, LHP BOS (Double-A)
6 IP, 3 BB, 7 K
Is Connelly Early underrated because he has a weird name? I think so? Just like Brandon Clarke in 2024, Early was the 5th-round pick of the Red Sox in 2023. He has been dominant at every minor league stop, showing both polish and multiple plus pitches from the left side. As we stand, Early has a sub-2 ERA and is making a strong push to be a big league starter next year.
‼️Tanner McDougal, RHP CHW (Double-A)
5 IP, 5 H, 2 BB, 8 K
Tanner McDougal has seamlessly made the jump from High-A to Double-A, something that is rare to see from younger pitching prospects. He’s freshly 22, and has the frame to be a legitimate middle of the rotation starter if everything goes right.
‼️Yunior Tur, RHP ATH (Double-A)
5.2 IP, 4 H, ER, 2 BB, 5 K
Yunior Tur is 25, but the results have been really impressive this year. In 20 Double-A innings, Tur is rocking a 0.9 ERA despite having average K and BB numbers. The fastball plays well for Tur, and the pitchability has taken a real step up from where it was last year. The Athletics pitching lab is back at it.
‼️ Juaron Watts-Brown, RHP TOR (Double-A)
4 IP, 4 H, BB, 5 K
Juaron Watts-Brown gets overshadowed by a lot of great Blue Jays pitching prospects, but he’s been performing really well this year. Juaron spins the ball really well, with a good feel for breaking pitches and an above-average fastball that gives him a lot of options to put hitters away. He’s been able to control the walks this year, which has put his numbers in a really good place. There is absolutely a big league contributor in some role in Juaron Watts-Brown.
‼️ Tyson Hardin, RHP MIL (Double-A)
5 IP, 2 H, BB, 5 K
Milwaukee just has guys up and down their farm to be excited about.
👟 Angel Genao, SS CLE (Double-A)
2-for-3, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB
Angel Genao might be my favorite prospect in baseball. I might even sneak him into my top 15 at midseason. When the power starts showing up more in games, Genao will be one of the biggest names in baseball. Get him while you still can.
🆕 Travis Sykora, RHP WAS (Double-A)
3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 6 K
Not the exact result Sykora was looking for, but his stuff clearly plays in the upper minors. He’ll need some time to polish the command up, but Sykora looks like the future top pitching prospect in baseball, and one of the few things Nationals fans should be excited about.
‼️Thomas White, LHP MIA (Double-A)
5 IP, 2 H, BB, 5 K
Not a whole lot of commentary needed here, Thomas White has struck out 35% of batters this year. I’d expect the command to start getting refined here soon, as White is halfway through his third professional season.
💣💣Cody Morissette, 2B MIA (Double-A)
2-for-3, 2 HR, 4 RBI, K
If you get a double dong, you make the sheet, that’s all.
High-A
Covered by Grant Carver
Drew Cavanaugh, DH SFG (High-A)
5-for-7, HR, 2 R, 5 RBI
5 hit nights are an extra rare thing to see in minor league ball, so this one has to be mentioned. Cavanaugh is a former 17th rounder that strikes out way too much and has not shown much consistent power, so not a name to watch for now. But 5 hits is 5 hits.
💣💣 Bo Davidson, CF SFG (High-A)
4-for-5, 2B, 2 HR, 6 R, 5 RBI, 2 BB
Double Dong day for Davidson, who has been looking to translate the same level of power to High-A that he showed in the lower levels. Davidson is not amazing at anything in particular, but he makes a decent amount of contact and has shown some solid power. He might run into some problems with the chase tendencies and the swing and miss, but for now it’s working. A really good snag as an undrafted free agent by the Giants.
Aidan Longwell, 1B COL (High-A)
3-for-4, HR, 5 RBI, BB
Productive night for the big first baseman. Longwell avoids striking out, but his low zone contact rates are a red flag that the hit tool is worse than you would think. He’s not a super notable name, but he’s producing for the Rockies right now.
Blake Burke, 1B MIL (High-A)
3-for-3, 2B, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB
If you like raw power and big time size, Burke is right up your alley. He hits some mammoth tanks and loves going the opposite way, which is an interesting choice. Also hits more ground balls than a guy with his profile normally does. Could use some swing/approach adjustments, but the tools for a power first baseman are at least in there.
Yiddi Cappe, DH MIA (High-A)
3-for-5, 2B, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, K
Good to see some power for Cappe, who is still looking to find some consistent impact for the fish. I still like the profile a good amount due to the elite bat to ball skills and the good approach. He has a great combination of hit speed, and shortstop defense, which is a toolset I really like. Hopefully he can find enough impact to be a regular.
‼️Ryan Johnson, RHP LAA (High-A)
7 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, BB, 8 K
Johnson was not ready for the big leagues despite the Angels insane attempt to get him there, but he might also be too good for High-A. The command has been really good and the fact he is going so deep into games after starting the year as a reliever is really impressive. I actually like the profile quite a bit, but the Angels are the Angels. It’s hard to believe in them when they do what they did with him to start the season.
Javier Rivas, 3B PIT (High-A)
2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI
Rivas continues his power outbreak on the year and this is home run number 16 on the season for him. It comes with some massive swing and miss and he is being too aggressive at the plate, but the power is still something of notice. If he finds a balance between the two he could get interesting, but long ways to go.
A.J. Ewing, CF NYM (High-A)
1-for-3, HR, 2 BB
The hype train has slowed a bit, but the dude is still very impressive. He’s smart at the plate and patient, so combining that with his elite hit tool is going to continue to work. The power is still a question and he hasn’t shown as much in High-A, but Ewing is still 20 years old. Has time to develop a couple ticks there.
🍔🍟 Ryan Spikes, 3B TBR (High-A)
2-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, K, SB
Spikes is a hit over power guy typically, so good to see him show some here. The guy can put the bat on the ball, but I don’t love the swing decisions and the power is a bit of a question. If he could just gain some more discipline at the plate, it would go a long way for the profile to work. Needs more than just bat to ball.
💣💣 Aidan Smith, CF TBR (High-A)
2-for-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, BB, 2 K
Double Dong day for the guy still trying to live up to the offseason hype. He has more hit tool questions to answer that we are still waiting for, but the guy has time. I may have gotten a bit too excited about the profile, but I am still pretty in on him. He has time to work on the hit tool, and if does he’ll live up to the hype.
💣💣 Wuilfredo Antunez, RF CLE (High-A)
2-for-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Antunez continues to show his power outbreak and has been impressive this season. He’s getting the ball up in the air more and it’s resulting in more home runs. Funny how that works. The hit tool looks decent too, so if the power sticks, he could get real interesting. I’d buy into it now.
Kevin McGonigle, SS DET (High-A)
4-for-6, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI
A Double-A promotion has to be coming soon for this guy. The man has proved himself as too good for this level and we all know why. Not many guys I like over him and he might be my top prospect in baseball.
Single-A
Covered by Matt Thompson
💣💣 Garrett Pennington, 1B DET (Single-A)
2-for-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI
The former North Carolina State Wolfpack product was an UDFA in 2024. He features a massive leg kick that he really gets deep into before uncoiling and ripping a line drive somewhere. He has a good plate approach, makes good contact and generally makes good swing decisions. Keep an eye on him, I’m not running out to pick him up just yet.
Brian Sanchez, OF NYY (Single-A)
2-for-2, 2B, R, 2 BB, SB
Sanchez was signed by the Brewers as an international free agent in 2023 and later that winter he was sent to the Yankees as part of the return for Jake Bauers. Sanchez has good speed and gap power and is an interesting piece to track going forward.
Dillon Head, OF MIA (Single-A)
2-for-4, 3B, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB, K
Head has cut the strikeout rate and seen the walk rate improve but it is not showing in his stat line as he’s hitting just .222/.320/.310 this year. He’s a plus-plus runner and isn’t going to be a source of power but he’s making too much weak contact at this point, even for him.
Nate Rombach, C WSH (Single-A)
3-for-4, HR, 2B, 2 RBI
Rombach was a late round selection in 2023 out of Dallas Baptist and the catcher has seen his production fall off a cliff this year. Hopefully this is what gets him going. He’s traded some line drives for flyballs and that can be tough in the Carolina League.
Esmith Pineda, OF CIN (Single-A)
2-for-3, HR, 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB
Pineda looks like an interesting lotto ticket for fantasy and just like anyone it’s going to come down to the hit tool. He’s cut the whiffs and is having his best seasons since his DSL run, and I wouldn’t fault you if you have him as a backend top 500 prospect for fantasy. He really should only be rostered in the super deep leagues at this point.
Max Holy, SS HOU (Single-A)
3-for-3, R, RBI, 2 BB
Admittedly this is a new name for me. Holy was an UDFA from the 2024 draft that the Astros identified out of Central Missouri State. The approach is solid, and he’s a good runner with good instincts but he really lacks power and doesn’t have a swing that projects to add much. Tough fit for fantasy right now.
Dakota Jordan, OF SF (Single-A)
3-for-5, HR, 2 2B, 3 R, 6 RBI, BB, K
Out of this group today Jordan is the must add of the Single-A bunch. He’s a guy I liked a bit in school and he’s been really productive as a professional in the early going. He’s a big dude with plus athleticism that traded some power for more contact skills early on but the power looks like it has caught up. He’s a stud.
Dylan Fien, DH ATH (Single-A)
4-for-4, 2 R, RBI
Fien can really hit, but I do have questions about the power ceiling. The high school catcher skipped Rookie ball entirely and made his professional debut in affiliated full-season ball, which is really rare for a high school kid. Take notice.
