While Cal Raleigh made history, Logan Gilbert had a career day himself, setting a new benchmark for strikeouts, fanning 13 Athletics on Sunday afternoon. Gilbert needed a bounceback start to correct what's been a struggle of a second half, and he got it in a big way here, inducing 25 whiffs (49%), the high mark for the day. Gilbert has had struggles with his slider, especially of late, but it was his money offering, getting whiffs on 62.5% of swings against it. Perhaps this start is a launching point for a hot September for one of baseball's better arms.
Jazz's rise to stardom in The Bronx continues as he continues to elevate the middle of the Yankees lineup, smacking a pair of home runs. Jazz was out for blood against a pair of former Dodgers as he got the scoring party going in the 2nd inning with a 105.1 mph tank off of Dustin May followed by a true Yankee Stadium home run off of Walker Buehler in the 8th. Chisholm is rapidly approaching a 4 win season (3.6 fWAR) and may flirt with 30 home runs, something only two other Yankee second basemen have done post-integration (Cano, Soriano x2).
Great things come in pairs as Trent Grisham mashed two home runs, driving himself in twice, and walking in his two other plate appearances as the Yankees took one from Boston, snapping an eight game losing streak against their rival. In his walk year, Grisham is priming himself to make some serious dough. Through the absences of Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm and slumps from Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Volpe, and Austin Wells, it's been Trent Grisham who's been their steady constant, coming through in big spots time and time again. Grisham's 131 wRC+ is second among qualified center fielders on the season, and is one of just 13 qualified players with a walk rate greater than 12% and a strikeout rate under 22%.
Despite the Brewers falling short in the 9th inning against the Giants, Abner Uribe held down a 3-2 lead in the 8th as he continues to prove he's one of baseball's very best relievers. Uribe worked around some traffic and struck out two in his one inning of relief work, and since the All-Star Break, across 16 appearances, he has yet to surrender an earned run. In that span, Uribe's sinker is generating a 30.7% whiff rate in that span while his slider is running a 47.7% whiff rate and has yet to surrender a hit or a single registered hard hit.
There hasn't been a hotter starting pitcher in baseball over the last two months than Trevor Rogers. He allowed some hard contact, but he was overall terrific, dominating with his changeup. Rogers's cambio induced a 43.8% whiff rate, and of the five balls put in play against it, all were groundballs. Across his 13 starts, Rogers has gone at least six innings in 11 of them. Across his 83.1 innings this season, Rogers has a 2.32 FIP, bested only by Tarik Skubal's mark of 2.21. Miami certainly won the trade in getting Kyle Stowers, but Baltimore's extremely risky gamble in getting Rogers in return has begun to pay off.
Coming into Sunday's start, Paul Skenes had allowed 10 runs across 21 innings in August. This incredibly rare multi-start struggle for Skenes came to an end against the Rockies as the NL Cy Young front runner struck out seven batters while just one ball in play registered over 100 mph. Skenes's sweeper was dancing, registering a 39% whiff rate, and his fastball overmatched the Rockies all day long, registering five of his seven strikeouts with his heater.
Ranger Suarez was in total control against the Nats on Sunday, fanning a career-high 11 batters en route to Philadelphia's seventh win over their last nine games. Suarez, who has struggled with consistency over the last month, was in a groove with his curveball and slider, generating a 52.6% whiff rate as a pair. Suarez has now pitched at least 125 innings in each of the last four seasons.
In the biggest game of the day in the season finale between the Dodgers and Padres, Dalton Rushing finally had his moment. Rushing has been in a sustained slump, just 4 for his last 42, where he's done nothing but roll over on breaking pitches or strike out. Consider this slump broken as the blue chip prospect came through in the clutch, launching a 3-run home run off of a Jeremiah Estrada 3-2 slider, making Estrada pay for walking Michael Conforto. It was a go-ahead shot that launched LA to a 5-2 lead they'd never look back from, and Los Angeles have won the pivotal season series over San Diego, giving them a leg up in the standings.
In a game the Dodgers had to have to salvage a series in San Diego, Freddie Freeman came up big for LA not once but twice. In the sixth, trailing 2-1, Freeman launched a solo home run, tying the game off Nick Pivetta. An inning later, Freeman had a chance to put the final nail in the coffin, and he slammed the lid shut, taking Wandy Peralta deep for a 2-run homer, putting the Dodgers up 7-2. Freeman had been quiet all series, but the pair of home runs just add onto what's been a terrific August for Freddie. Freeman is slashing .325/.390/.663 with 7 home runs after a two month slog, and his play will help dictate who wins the West.
History was made in Seattle on Sunday afternoon as Cal Raleigh smacked a pair of home runs, making him the single-season leader in home runs by a catcher with 49. Raleigh's 2025 season is the stuff of dreams as he's elevated himself into one of the best players in baseball while also etching his name into the record books in many ways. On top of setting the catcher home run record, Raleigh's multi-home run game marked his ninth on the season, the most in a single season by a switch hitter ever. Raleigh now sits tied with Aaron Judge with 7.3 fWAR as the MVP race feels to be tilting in the favor of the Big Dumper.
I've never had a game with so many players that I am unconcerned with homer. I count 7 between the two teams and only one former top prospect. (It's Marco Luciano and I refuse to give him a blurb until he is hitting above .250. A mark he hasn't seen since he went 2-for-4 in his first game this year.) Back to the double-dong. The former Sycamore (Go MVC) had himself a night and now tallies 45 career MiLB homers.
The speedster that is Abi Ortiz. His first Triple-A steal completes the combo meal and thus he is sheet worthy. The 23-year-old is enjoying the PCL with a .321/.424/.696 line so far this season. If he finishes the year strong, you'd have to get excited about his prospect potential a little again right? (I wouldn't because 1B are stupid. It's such an easy position.)
If any of you are actually clairvoyant, please just message me and let me know which Cardinals catcher to start rooting for. I have decision paralysis.
