Sometimes, I can't help myself, and usually, I would have waited an entire week to get this started to get a whole week of data, but where is the fun in that? Who doesn't want to overanalyze what is a handful of a plate of appearances or innings attached to prospects that, in this part of their prospect journey, are nothing but projection? This is the DSL Weekly Rundown, where I play around with the format and highlight prospects for other people to pick up in their leagues.
With the success of Jesus Made, who is probably the second-best prospect in all of baseball for me, these sorts of articles are bound to pop up, and thanks to specific teams posting their YouTube streams (presumably for player's families and not for some nincompoop like myself) the evaluation process has gotten a touch easier. It is still not perfect, and by no means is this "scouting" because I am not a "scout." But this scratches that itch for people who have major FOMO with not scooping up Jesus Made and other intriguing prospects. As we all know, a large number of the stars of tomorrow will get their start in the Dominican Summer League.
I went in thinking a few notable prospects would perform well, and well, I was wrong. A lot of the top prospects got their pro journeys started with a bang. I would love to get to every notable prospect's debut, but we have an entire season to talk about them.
Let's start with the name I am sure everyone wants me to talk about: Josuar de Jesus Gonzalez of the San Francisco Giants; it was between him and Elian Peña of the New York Mets. But we will talk about the latter a touch later. Josuar de Jesus Gonzalez's season started with a bang, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. It's not bad for one of the higher drafted targets, FYPD prospects, who are sneaking into the back end of the first round of some leagues, depending on the league size and the risk tolerance.
Josuar has a swing geared towards making contact, and he has just enough lift in it, in the videos I have seen, to get to some power. The hit tool gives him a high floor as a prospect, as he pairs good bat-to-ball skills with a good understanding of the strike zone. When writing this, I am watching the Giants Blac (the team he is on) go against one of the Yankees DSL squads, and he took a ball on the outer third to the opposite field. If he routinely shows the ability to poke the ball to the opposite field like he just did, we are gone have a potential 60-hitter on our hands.
The fantasy upside with Josuar is high. He shows good power right now, and being that he is only 17 years old, he hasn't gotten his "man-strength," yet we could see the power and the overall offensive upside take a massive jump forward. It is still far too early to form any sort of concrete opinion on Josuar, but if everything works the way it has been, he will be a top 50 prospect, maybe top 25, by the time he comes stateside.
