Jacob Maxwell's Live Looks: Cape Cod League 6/14, 6/19/25
Jacob Maxwell got out to the Cape Cod League for opening week for some live looks at two different games that featured plenty of interesting prospects.
Cape Cod League baseball is back! After spending the last two summers as an intern in the league, I am now just a fan. I have already gotten looks at numerous potential future first round picks, and look forward to covering the league all summer.
Games covered in this post include:
6/14/25 Harwich Mariners vs Bourne Braves 6/19/25 Bourne Braves vs Hyannis Harbor Hawks
McCoy got the nod on Opening Day for Harwich, and he did not disappoint. After two games, he remains the top arm I’ve scouted on the Cape. The left-hander from South Carolina threw four scoreless innings, striking out 10 without issuing a walk. McCoy relied solely on his fastball and slider in this outing, just as he did for most of the spring. His delivery features a bit of a cross-body action from a lower slot that appears extremely difficult for hitters to pick up. He threw 47 fastballs and generated 9 whiffs with the pitch. He even overpowered Justin LeBron — the potential 1:1 in 2026 — with a high heater (clip included below). The slider was on all night as well. McCoy got 5 whiffs on 22 pitches with it and consistently landed strikes against both lefties and righties. From an MLB projection standpoint, it may be tough for McCoy to stick as a starter with just two pitches, but he has all the makings of a valuable bullpen piece. Both the fastball and slider played at least above average on Opening Day, and I’ll be tracking him closely throughout the summer.
Walked away very impressed with LHP Jake McCoy on Opening Day in the @OfficialCCBL. Had 10 strikeouts and double digit whiffs in just 4 IP. Got Justin LeBron for the second time with a high fastball here. pic.twitter.com/mOMAEGUJUv
Lebron's Cape stint lasted just 3 games unless he comes back later in the summer, but I was lucky enough to get at least one live look in. The Alabama shortstop had a monster sophomore season, displaying both a feel to hit and immense power at a premium position. He didn't do much at the plate in this game, going 0-for-5 and striking out twice against Jake McCoy. There was still noticeable bat speed, and the swing looks clean as far as mechanics are concerned. I have no doubt he would have gotten the bat rolling if he were still on the Cape. What really fired me up was how good Lebron looked at shortstop. He didn't get too many chances to show off defensively in this one, but the fluidity he possesses is noticeable. It's an incredibly smooth operation, and he has plenty of range and arm strength. No doubt in my mind he sticks at short in pro ball.
