The Philadelphia Phillies have a solid top 20 in their farm system, but unlike many other organizations, their depth beyond that is well below average. Finding honorable mentions for this organization was a real challenge. However, I’ve managed (because I am fantastic) to highlight an intriguing mix of players—some close to the majors with potential as role players and others further away, with present flaws but notable upside.
The Phillies don't often get mentioned for their pitching development, but low-key (look at me trying to relate to the youths), they've quietly become one of the more underrated player development organizations in the game. Mavis Graves is a prospect I came across during a deep dive into the Phillies' system, and honestly, you could argue he deserved a report. A 6'6" left-hander with a solid changeup, and present feel for it, at such a young age warrants more attention.
Graves has struck out 31.8% of the batters he faced at Single-A in 2024 while walking just 9.8%. Beyond his towering height, his ability to kill loft on his changeup and arm slot gives him a strong relief floor. The main issue, though, is his breaking ball—it's inconsistent, and that ultimately hurts the profile.
The big question with the massive southpaw is whether he remains a starter or transitions to a bullpen role. With his Rule 5 draft eligibility looming in 2026, there's a chance the Phillies keep him as a starter for another year before possibly moving him to relief. If he does transition to the bullpen, he'll need a velocity jump, as his fastball currently sits in the 89-93 mph range. As things stand, his most likely bullpen role could be as a piggyback option—paired with a right-handed reliever to each handle a trip through the lineup.
