Evaluator: Tyler Henninger

Age: 22 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40 Man Roster

Physical Description: Short, compact frame. Strong, thick lower half. Fair upper body muscular development. Excellent flexibility. Not body type to add more weight or strength.

Hit: Slightly open stance with hands letter high stretched back toward catcher from the left side. Hands at head and closer to body from the right side. Slightly crouched with wider base from the left side and more shoulder width apart from the right. Minimal hand load with slight barrel wrap and hitch. Sizeable leg kick timing mechanism, eliminates with two-strikes. Good weight transfer, loads backside well. Average bat speed with linear bat path. Uses the entire field. Line drive approach with exceptional bat to ball skills. Advanced approach, good strike zone awareness and pitch recognition. Innate ability to make solid contact. Line drive machine. Better from the left side. Grade: 50

Power: Below-average raw power, well-below average game power. Bat path and approach hinder ability to lift ball. Very little homerun potential. Shows ability to spray hard hit line drives to gap. Future power will be of XBH variety. Grade: 30

Field: Plus defender with ability to receive and block balls. Makes it look easy. Soft hands, firm wrists allow for quality framing. Sticks low pitch well. Solid, flexible base. Provides good target. Good body control, quiet. Above average blocking ability. Moves side to side exceptionally well. Shows leadership and ability to handle pitching staff. Grade: 60

Arm: Above average arm with proper throwing mechanics. Carries through the bag when on top, slight tail occasionally. On the money most of the time. Quick transfer and short release. Advanced footwork with good body control. Throws out good runners. Grade: 60

Run: Below-average runner, but moves decent for a catcher. Short, choppy steps. Some stiffness in lower body. Gets out of the box decently with average acceleration. Uses instincts to make up for lack of speed, can still score from second and take the occasional extra base. Grade: 40

Overall: Marchan is exactly what you want from a catcher. He is exceptional behind the plate with the ability to frame, block, and lead a pitching staff. His quick release and advanced footwork allow him to throw out a lot of good base stealers. With the bat he will never be a homerun threat, likely will rarely hit any, but he can still have an impact on the offensive side. He has the ability to spray line drives all over the field from both sides of the plate. He rarely strikes out due to his advanced approach and pitch recognition skills. His speed is below-average but uses his instincts to get everything he can out of it. If the bat provides enough value, Marchan could be an average everyday catcher, but the glove alone will allow him to at least be a quality backup.
