Not too many teams have both great major league rosters and great minor league systems. Many have one or the other; some have none, but few have both. This current iteration of the Mariners is one of those select few. This team has been built around pitching and currently has one of the top starting staffs in MLB, and their bullpen isn't too shabby either. It's served them well as they have recorded five straight seasons of 85 or more wins.
The Mariners have five horses in their rotation who provide quality and quantity. This is an unrelenting attack for opposing offenses that don't get the opportunity to beat up on a sub-par pitcher or two. Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryan Woo, Bryce Miller, and Luis Castillo can all provide quality innings, which keeps the pen rested and allows them to fill the role they've been assigned to.
Throughout this run, the offense has been good, but not great, and the narrative is changing with each passing season. Julio is the young superstar, Big Dumper is the heart and soul, and the rest of the lineup has been upgraded from past versions of this team. The front office just locked up Josh Naylor - who was a trade deadline acquisition from the DBacks - to a 5-year contract to solidify the middle of the order.
We mentioned the farm system being a strength, and we will see over the next three years just how good some of their top prospects are. Colt Emerson leads the charge, followed by fellow infielder Michael Arroyo, and by outfielders Lazaro Montes and Jonny Farmelo. On the pitching side, early round picks Ryan Sloan and Kade Anderson are as good a 1-2 minor league punch as you can get.
