With our last Spring Training Daily Sheet, we have Nate and Rhys' award predictions.
Nate’s Award Predictions
AL RoY: Jackson Jobe
AL Cy Young: Garrett Crochet
AL MVP: Bobby Witt Jr
NL RoY: Andrew Painter
NL Cy Young: Paul Skenes (or Spencer Schwellenbach)
NL MVP: Paul Skenes
Reasoning: After all of my Jacob Wilson coverage this Spring I have gone with Jackson Jobe as my rookie of the year pick to allow the OG JW fan Rhys White to pick Wilson alone. I don’t think you can go wrong with either of them this year. Crochet has looked unhittable this Spring, and if he stays healthy the Cy Young should be a two-man race between him and Skubal. Bobby Witt Jr’s 2024 could’ve won MVP in plenty of past years, and I believe there is still another level for him to reach. Andrew Painter might seem impossible, but this NL Rookie of the Year race is wide open. Your favorites are Sasaki, Shaw, and Crews, none of which I’m super excited about in a 2025 vacuum. If none of them separate themselves as great, could we see Andrew Painter steal the show in the second half when he debuts? I think as a society we’ve forgotten how good Painter can be when healthy. My sleeper Cy Young in the NL is Spencer Schwellenbach who has become a popular breakout pick for this year after a stellar 2024. My boldest prediction of all is that Paul Skenes will win the NL MVP. It’s probably impossible, but a sub-2 ERA feels reasonable at this point. If Skenes drags the Pirates to the playoffs somehow, how could we not consider him the best player in the NL? I think it's really easy and smart to go chalk in award picks, but the NL shows the depth of options and deep value if you’re a betting person.
Rhys’ Award Predictions:
AL RoY: Jacob Wilson
AL Cy Young: Tarik Skubal
AL MVP: Jose Ramirez
NL RoY: Roki Sasaki
NL Cy Young: Zack Wheeler
NL MVP: Bryce Harper
Reasoning: Nate did decide to cower on Jacob Wilson, huh? Tarik Skubal is the best pitcher in the world and will pitch like it again for back-to-back Cy Youngs. Does this make me a homer? Probably? Is it out of the realm of possibilities? No. JRam wins the MVP that has alluded him his entire career. Roki is the chalk pick, and I am nothing but chalky. Wheeler is the best pitcher in the NL and should win a Cy Young at some point. Harper is my favorite hitter ever, and I will make this one happen.
Thomas Harrington, RHP PIT (Grapefruit League) 3 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 K, HR Allowed
Harrington is gonna be up at some point this year for the Pirates and be a solid back-end of the rotation piece. The fastball generated 3 whiffs in his final outing of the spring. That was one of the few positives to gain from this outing, as the Twins were teeing off on him. Things like like this happen, he will go to Indianapolis and wait until about the midseason, or if a need arises in the Pirates rotation.
