Folks, what Agustin Ramirez is doing right now is absolutely insane...
...and it is also somewhat annoying.
You see, I had an entirely different lead-in written about Jordan Beck, but AgRam's 2 HR Sunday (in Seattle, no less) has left me with no choice! Even after being the highest in the entire industry on his prospect upside, I am pleasantly perplexed with what we're seeing.
Today, we'll dig in and see how long we can expect this #Agustinsanity to last.
While we’re at it, I think it’s worth talking about some other buzzier bats: the aforementioned Beck, as well as the unsexy-yet-sturdy Jonathan Aranda.
For anyone feeling deprived on SP talk, I’ll get back into some pitching options next week. Believe me, I almost crammed Matthew Liberatore into this column!
Different Agustin Ramirez, sadly
Agustin Ramirez, C/1B, MIA
Agustin Ramirez may be lighting the baseball world on fire right now, but it was only about a week ago that he was a lesser-hyped fantasy baseball prospect. Leaving the Yankees' media machine can do that to a man.
Evidence: when I search for him on Google, he competes with a Mexican singer-songwriter for the top rank.
But if AgRam keeps performing anywhere close to how he has been all that is about to change.
Mr. Ramirez’s Savant page is bright red, and it includes some elements (like bat speed) that are pretty hard to consider fluky. Frankly, his minor league career has demonstrated a polished offensive profile that offers a beautiful blend of patience and aggression. He only finished below an 11% K rate once (back in 2019 as a 17-year-old), and the last time he finished with an OPS below .819 was in 2021.
Some elite bats try to swing out of their shoes to get to their power, whereas others overutilize their disciplined eye and don’t do enough damage.
Not Agustin Ramirez!
If you recall, a member of the Yankees organization once described Ramirez as a “generational” bat. While I’m not entirely sure I’d go that far, I don’t think that fella was making things up.
There’s a lot to be excited about with Agustin Ramirez, and he should be considered a top-10 catcher for dynasty and redraft purposes moving forward.
Believe it or not, I actually wrote that last paragraph before the kid smashed two more bombs in spacious Seattle on Sunday evening. Feeling even better about it!
One caveat: despite his history of swiping bags, he's not a burner, so lower those MLB stolen base expectations a little. That said, even 5-10 SB from the C/1B slot is a welcome development!
As much as I love Agustin Ramirez (I once ranked him as high as #6 on my prospect rankings), I'll also warn that this is a terrible buying window for the kid. I recommend waiting for him to struggle and then pouncing on impatient GMs’ window of doubt.
Long-term, I think we’re looking at a can’t-miss fantasy asset.
