We have to go all the way back to 2019, when they finished second in the division with a 93-69 record, to find the last time Washington finished any higher than fourth in the National League East. 2025 was supposed to be the year their young core started coming together, but instead, they finished with their worst record since going 55-107 in 2022. That young core of hitters showed flashes of exciting talent but failed to consistently impress, while their pitching was another notch below. The good news for Nationals fans is that reinforcements are on the way and should be arriving on both sides of the ball. We haven’t loved Washington’s development system lately, but we haven’t hated it either. While they do have some strong prospects, the system isn’t exactly loaded. In my opinion, they’re about middle of the pack as far as farm systems go, so at least a few of these youngsters should be legitimate contributors in the next few years.
