The Diamondbacks are not scared off by smaller prospects with loud tools; they have drafted a few of these types in recent years. The Diamondbacks draft and develop well, and go under the radar as one of the best in that realm. They scout tools and aren’t afraid of outliers in the size or power department. A lot of their hitting prospects have a baseline of a solid hit tool, and they do their best to coax more power out of them. Look at how much power they have unlocked from Corbin Carroll. The Diamondbacks are also one of the better pitching organizations, as they coax more breaking stuff out of some of their pitching prospects and heavily scout good fastballs and feel for spin. The Diamondbacks are in a weird spot as a major league team right now. Will they be sellers? Will they go on a winning streak and make an improbable run to the World Series? That is the question for their brass to figure out. But they have a good, solid organization with some interesting additions from the draft.
About Our Top 20 Lists
Prospects Live, led by its evaluating team & Director of Scouting Rhys White, is proud to be rolling out its annual system reports. The team combines industry feedback, our live looks, film, and available data to compile each org. We believe this effort has enabled us to present you, the reader, with our best possible view of the prospects in the organization.
We have constructed this list using the Overall Future Potential (OFP) scale. There is no perfect equation for ranking prospects or assigning value to them, but we believe this method is the best possible approach. Every prospect on this list has been graded based on the tried and true 20-80 scouting scale. An 80 is the highest tool and OFP grade on the scale, reserved for MVP-caliber players or tools. Conversely, a 20 is reserved for non-prospects (NPs). A 50 OFP falls in the middle, indicating our evaluators deem this player a future average major league player. Below the 50 OFP tier are the 45s and 40s, comprising a large majority of players on each list. These are specific-role players, such as platoon hitters, utility players, or low-leverage relievers. Above the 50 OFP tier are the 55s and 60s. A 55 represents a future above-average player, and a 60 OFP designation is reserved for future All-Star caliber players.
In addition to the tool grades and OFP, we will also include a 'Risk' associated with each prospect. We use this to better communicate to you, the reader, whether a grade is more aggressive or conservative in nature. The evaluation team has worked hard to apply both the grades and risk components to better illustrate how each individual prospect stacks up in their respective system and in the baseball ecosystem.
The Diamondbacks selected Ryan Waldschmidt out of the University of Kentucky with the Prospect Promotion Incentive pick they received after Corbin Carroll won the Rookie of the Year award. He started his college career at Charleston Southern before transferring to the University of Kentucky. He tore his ACL in his left knee while down at the cape but remarkably made it back and absolutely raked. He hit .335/.465/.613 in his draft year but injury concerns dropped him down to the 31st pick. Waldschmidt is a corner outfielder with above-average speed, but he lacks the first step quickness to stick in center for anything longer than a short stint. Offensively Waldschmidt had one of the better hit tools in the college class and it was backed up by good swing decisions and limited chase. He’s a little stiff offensively but he can catch up to velocity and has no issues hitting the ball in the air consistently. He’s a grinder that keeps his head down and plays hard, getting the most out of his tools. Waldschmidt has one of the highest floors in the draft, and he projects as an everyday left fielder, possibly as soon as 2026. - Matt Thompson
Dynasty Outlook
Waldschmidt has backed up the scouting report this year by showing a good combination of contact, approach, power, and speed. He’s rapidly ascended fantasy lists as a result and is now an easy top 50 prospect. His value should continue to increase as the Diamondbacks hitter friendly ballparks in the upper minors will only boost his hype. - Taylor Corso
