College Daily Sheet: Friday 05/02/25 - Rain Can’t Stop the Heat: Arms Dominate Friday Slate
The College Daily Sheet team continues with their non-stop coverage as the Friday slate provided another round of standout performances and breakout moments from stars across the country.
Friday night was a showcase of pitching excellence, as arms across the country delivered with precision, power, and poise. From complete-game shutouts and double-digit strikeout performances to poised bullpen work in high-leverage spots, the mound told the story in nearly every matchup. While weather forced several teams to adjust or postpone their Friday schedules, those who took the field made it clear: as the postseason nears, dependable pitching is becoming the great separator.
Madness unfolded in Tallahassee Friday night as Clemson and Florida State delivered an instant classic to open the weekend. The Tigers built an early 4-2 lead, but the Seminoles battled back to tie it up and force extras. In the 10th, it looked like the Tigers had taken control, until Williams flipped the script. After launching a clutch game-tying homer in the bottom of the 10th to keep FSU alive, Williams came through again in the 11th with a walk-off single to left, sealing a wild 7-6 win for the Noles.
It was a hard-fought battle in Tallahassee, and while the Tigers took advantage of Jamie Arnold’s exit with a three-run seventh to grab the lead, game one ultimately didn’t break their way. Clemson’s bats showed life late, with Listi locked in at the plate, he delivered a multi-hit performance and crushed a go-ahead home run in extras to briefly put the Tigers in front. But in a back-and-forth affair, it wasn’t enough to seal the deal as FSU walked it off in the 11th.
Carson Tinney has taken the “Fighting Irish” mantra personally this spring, and the Cardinals felt all of it. The sophomore catcher, just a year removed from ACL surgery, delivered a statement performance with a 4-for-5 day that included three RBIs, three runs, and a no-doubt 427-foot missile to center (114 MPH EV) that ignited Notre Dame’s 10-3 victory, a triple away of the cycle.
Tinney's been on an absolute heater through April, going 28-for-57 (.491) with 7 doubles, 9 homers, and 24 RBIs. On the season, he's now slashing .367/.789 with 14 HR, 12 doubles, 47 RBIs, and a rock-solid .989 fielding percentage behind the dish, firmly placing himself in the All-ACC and national spotlight. If he continues this hot bat into the month of May, he could place himself as an early top 100 favorite for the 2026 MLB Draft and even a hot name in the coaching circles for the portal.
Daniel Cuvet, 3B, Miami - 3 AB, 2 R, 2 H, 5 RBI, 2 HR, 0 BB, 1 K
Cuvet is making a strong case as one of the most dangerous bats in the ACC, and he might just be the most feared right now alongside Tinney. On Friday night, he dismantled one of the premier pitching staffs in the nation, torching the Wolfpack with a 2-for-3, 5 RBI showing that included a pair of no-doubt homers in his first two ABs. In the first, he turned on a fastball at the top of the zone and demolished it to dead center for a 2-run shot. One inning later, he jumped on a 0-1 pitch and yanked it into the left field seats for another 2-run tank.
Over his last 11 games, Cuvet is hitting .385 (15-for-39) with 4 doubles, 6 home runs, and 20 RBIs, production that firmly cements him in the top 10 range for our upcoming 2026 MLB Draft rankings.
