Sunday’s college slate was loaded with impact performances as teams continued to battle for postseason positioning and individual players made their final pushes to impress. While this edition focuses solely on the top-tier conferences, the absence of mid-major coverage comes as Switz had to step away from that section for this Sunday editon. Even so, the action didn’t disappoint, whether it was Drew Faurot’s walk-off run-rule blast, Braden Holcomb’s two-homer showing, or Leighton Finley dealing on the mound, Sunday delivered plenty of standout moments with postseason implications.
Ike Irish may not be putting up the same eye-popping numbers he did a year ago, and with the draft cycle in full swing, there’s a sense of fatigue around a player who’s been on radars since his freshman year. He’s not catching this spring, which has contributed to the narrative, but make no mistake, Irish is still having a fantastic season at the plate, slashing .329/.439/.638 with 11 home runs in just 39 games.
With how chaotic the weekend series in Knoxville was, we decided to hold off on any reporting for it until the Sunday sheet; which had seen some weird scheduling conflict played across two days due to weather. However, it served as a strong reminder of why Irish is still viewed as a potential top-20 pick in July; facing one of the best Friday night arms in the country and battling through heavy rain, Irish wasted no time making an impact. In his first at-bat Friday, he went opposite field for a two-run homer, setting the tone before the game was paused due to weather.
When play resumed on Saturday, Irish picked up right where he left off. In his first at-bat of the day, he delivered again with an RBI single (once again going the other way), before stealing second base to cap off a well-rounded performance. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored, three RBI, and a reminder to everyone watching that his bat still plays loud.
Irish may not be behind the plate this season, but his elite hit tool, strength to all fields, and track record of SEC success continue to make him one of the most polished offensive talents in the class.
Luke Heyman, 1B/C, Florida:
Game 1 - 5 AB, 4 R, 2 H, 3 RBI, 2 HR, 1 BB, 1 K
Game 2 (played C) - 4 AB, 0 R, 0 H, 0 RBI, 0 BB, 2 K
Luke Heyman continues to build momentum as a high selection draft pick, delivering another standout performance in Game 1 of Florida’s doubleheader sweep over South Carolina. The Gators’ backstop went 2-for-5 with two home runs, a walk, four runs scored, and three RBI in the series-opening win.
Heyman showcased his all-fields power in the fifth inning, launching a 2-1 fastball to right-center for a leadoff solo shot. Two innings later, he showed off his plate discipline, working the count before turning on another 2-1, 90 mph fastball and sending it 395 feet over the left-field fence for his 13th home run of the season.
He wasn't done impacting the game either. Heyman reached on a fielder’s choice in the eighth and walked in the ninth, coming around to score both times and further fueling Florida’s offensive output.
With his ability to drive the ball to all fields, a growing home run total, and steady defensive presence behind the plate, he is looking to be one of the highly regarded backstops in the country when July rolls around.
Brendan Lawson, 3B, Florida:
Game 1 - 6 AB, 3 R, 2 H, 5 RBI, 1 HR, 1 BB, 0 K
Game 2 - 4 AB, 0 R, 2 H, 1 RBI, 0 BB, 0 K
Despite a challenging season overall for Florida, Lawson has emerged as a major bright spot and one of the most exciting young hitters in the country. Slashing .331/.447/.561 in his debut campaign, Lawson is already drawing comparisons to former Gator greats like Wyatt Langford and Jac Caglianone, with the potential to follow in their footsteps as a future first-rounder when he becomes draft-eligible in 2027.
In Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader (resuming play after Saturday’s weather suspension), Lawson delivered in a big way, going 2-for-6 with a walk, a home run, three runs scored, and five RBI to lead Florida to a dominant win over South Carolina. After starting the game 0-for-4, he came through in the eighth with a two-strike RBI single up the middle, later scoring in the same frame. In his next trip, he drew a four-pitch walk and came around to score again.
Then, with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Lawson launched an opposite-field grand slam (his ninth home run of the season), to officially put the game out of reach and seal the win.
He followed that up in Game 2 by going 2-for-4 with another RBI, helping Florida secure the doubleheader sweep. With his advanced approach, emerging power, and ability to deliver in big spots, Lawson looks every bit the part of the next star in Gainesville, and one of the premier bats in the 2027 draft class.
