12/11 LIDOM Recap: Joe Dunand Stays Hot

In the thick of the MLB Virtual Winter Meetings, and the baseball world focused on big trades like Raisel Iglesias to the Angels and Lance Lynn to the White Sox, it is time to provide a LIDOM update of Friday night’s games, featuring all six teams of LIDOM.

Tigres del Licey (3) vs Aguilas Cibaenas (4) — 7 inn

Tigres del Licey (6) vs Aguilas Cibaenas (5) — 7 inn

TIGRES DEL LICEY

  • Prospect Sergio Alcantara had a great performance in Game 2, by going 2 for 2 with 3 RBI, and is now continuing to add to his ‘red hot’ season, with a .366 AVG.

  • Emilio Bonifacio was also a major deciding factor in Game 2, with a 2 for 4 performance, double, triple, and 1 RBI.

  • Another bright spot was young RHP Elvis Luciano, who shut down the Tigres, with 4.0 scoreless innings, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. He is an intriguing young prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays, and it will be interesting to see if he can carry over his success in the Dominican Winter League to Spring Training.

AGUILAS CIBAENAS

  • Melky Cabrera continues to produce, and in Game 1 of the doubleheader, he was a terrific bright spot, going 2 for 3 with a big home run, and 2 RBI, which now brings his season totals 16 for 59 at the plate.

  • Ramon Rosso, who had a rough start to the 2020 season, is making the most of his opportunities in the Dominican Winter League by dominating Tigres del Licey with 5.0 solid innings, and 9 strikeouts, which brings his season totals to a 1.13 ERA and a 5/29 (BB/K). He is a pitcher that possesses a dynamic fastball that can touch 97 mph coming out of the bullpen and if he can start to put it all together then he could be a formidable force out of a bullpen.

  • Neftali Feliz is one of many looking for a potential comeback in the majors. He earned a save in Game 1, and now boasts a 2.45 ERA, and a 3/1 K/BB ratio to go along with six saves.

Leones del Escogido (5) vs Torros del Este (2) — 9 inn

LEONES DEL ESCOGIDO

  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had quite a performance in Leones del Escogido’s victory, going 3 for 4, with two solo home runs as he looks to prove he can hit the ball in the air more.

  • Marlins infield prospect Joe Dunand, continues his sizzling production at the plate, going 1 for 3 with a HR and an RBI, which brings his season totals to a .361 AVG (second in the league), 3 HR, and 11 RBI. The Marlins have high hopes that he will be a at least a second division starter and maybe his production in the Dominican Winter League could be a sign of things to come.

  • David Paulino delivered in relief, with 3.1 scoreless innings, while striking out 5 batters, which brings his season totals to a 2.35 ERA and 23 Ks.

  • Drew Carlton, who looks to become an intriguing bullpen arm for the Detroit Tigers, fired a scoreless inning, while giving up only one hit, and striking out a batter, and now has a 0.75 ERA, 1:11 (BB/K).

TORROS DEL ESTE

  • While Yasiel Puig failed to record a hit in his debut, he was able to reach base safely with two walks and is a player who is looking to rebuild himself after missing all of the 2020 season.

  • Jorge Mateo was a lone bright spot at the plate in today’s matchup, going 2 for 4, with a solo home run in the ninth inning to prevent the shutout.

Gigantes del Cibao (0) vs Estrellas Orientales (5) — 9 inn

GIGANTES DEL CIBAO

  • Kelvin Gutierrez, one of the lone bright spots in the loss to Orientales, went 1 for 3, with a double and a walk to bring his season totals to a scorching .364 AVG, with 6 RBI, and a .481 OBP. The former Washington National and now Kansas City Royals infield prospect, is looking to make a name for himself throughout the remainder of the winter league and into Spring Training.

  • Searching for a pitching bright spot in last night’s defeat, Fernando Romero delivered with an inning of shut out baseball, giving up no hits, no walks, and punching out three.

ESTRELLAS ORIENTALES

  • Jeremy Pena, who could be a key contributor in the Houston Astros future middle infield, had a good showing at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a HR, an RBI, which brings his season totals to a .290 AVG, 2 HR, 2 RBI.

  • Socrates Brito, who needed a good showing at the plate, finally got his wish last night when he went 2 for 4 with two doubles, and an RBI. He also produced in the outfield by making an outstanding catch in centerfield and initiated a double play to end the ball game, sealing the victory for Orientales.

  • Bullpen arm, Williams Jerez, who is looking to regain his form, had a solid inning of work last night with no hits while striking out the side.

  • New Boston Red Sox RHP: Joel Payamps, continued to have a successful Dominican Winter League campaign thus far, with 2.0 innings of work, giving up only 1 hit, and 4 strikeouts, bringing his season totals to a 1.38 ERA, 2:14 (BB/K). If he can continue his success into Spring Training, to go along with a fastball that can touch 96 mph, then he could be a big factor in the bullpen.

  • Former New York Yankees pitching prospect, and now a member of the Oakland A’s organization, Domingo Acevedo, had a stellar outing, with 3.0 solid innings of work, giving up 1 hit, and 3 strikeouts, which brings his season totals, to a 7.0 innings of shutout ball, 2:6 (BB/K), and will be an intriguing pitcher to watch throughout the rest of the Dominican Winter League, and heading into Spring Training 2021.
