Under-The-Radar Prospects 2021: AL Central

With spring training a month away, here is a list of potential prospects to keep an eye on.

AL Central

CHICAGO WHITE SOX

  • OF: Micker Adolfo: Signed as an international free agent, back in 2013, from the Dominican Republic, the young outfielder has yet to fully tap into the hit tool. But when you dive deeper into the numbers, he could be a sleeper for both fans of prospects and fantasy.

    In 2019, through 36 total games, between both the rookie and Double-A levels, he posted a .390 BABIP, .350 OBP, .348 wOBA, 111 wRC+, 30.0% LD%, 36.8% FB%.

Even though it is a short sample size, if he can carry over those stats into spring training and get past the injury woes, he could be an option for fantasy owners looking to fill out their rosters.

CLEVELAND INDIANS

  • RHP: Josh Wolf: Recently just part of the Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco trade to the New York Mets, the former second round selection by the Mets will take some time to develop but he is an intriguing pitching prospect.

Wolf has a fastball that averages 94, and can touch 97 on occasion, to go along with a good curveball, and changeup. He is also working on adding a slider to his arsenal.

    In a short but impressive sample size, he has pitched to a 3.38 ERA, 0.88 FIP, 1.25 WHIP, 1.13 BB/9, 13.5 K/9, 36.8 GB% and a 31.6 FB%.

A prep player, Wolf is making a strong early impression. Cleveland officials think very highly of his potential to include him in a trade package for one of the best shortstops in baseball.

DETROIT TIGERS

  • OF: Jose De La Cruz: The young international free agent, out of the Dominican Republic, is not mentioned as much as other highly regarded prospects in the Tigers farm system, but he is a name baseball fans should start to become familiar with. Tigers officials, like the director of international operations Tom Moore, are very intrigued with the tools he possesses.

In 2019, in the Dominican Summer League, Cruz posted a .307 AVG, .411 BABIP, .375 OBP, .556 SLG, 149 wRC+, .433 wOBA, 11 HR, 39 RBI, 16 SB, through 56 games, and 253 plate appearances.

These are all impressive stats for a young international player and if all goes according to plan, we might see Cruz take his talents stateside this year.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS

  • 3B: Kelvin Gutierrez: The Royals will be on the lookout for guys that can step up to the plate and produce offensively. Gutierrez might have his name penciled into the everyday lineup card as soon as opening day.

In 2019 for the Omaha Storm Chasers, he posted a .349 BABIP, .427 SLG, .367 OBP, and a .347 wOBA. That does not include his performance in the 2020-21 Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) where he has posted a .396 AVG, .492 OBP, .604 SLG, 2 HR, 11 RBI in 53 at-bats and 17 games, during the regular season. He has also taken his play to a whole new level in the LIDOM playoffs, with a .505 AVG, .572 SLG, and a .505 OBP.

If he can carry over these numbers into spring training then it’ll be hard to decline him an everyday role.

MINNESOTA TWINS

  • RHP: Matt Canterino: The former Rice Owl is looking to become a young stud for the Minnesota Twins and he has not disappointed since entering pro ball.

In 2019, he posted a combined-statistics of 1.58 ERA, 2.01 FIP, 2.5 BB/9, 11 K/9, 0.63 WHIP, 12.9 LD%, and 42 GB%, through 25.0 IP. The right-hander features an unorthodox delivery, but the ball explodes out of his hands, and pitches can jump on hitters in a hurry, with a 96 mph heater, to go along with a slider, curveball, and changeup.

With the 2020 season cut short, due to COVID-19, Canterino will be looking to further add to his career minor league stats and become a key member of the Twins future rotation that faces some question marks after 2021 when key starting pitchers Jose Berrios and Michael Pineda are due to hit free agency.
