Why To Pick Up
I included a quick mention in last week's article introduction about Devin Fitz-Gerald as I started to get excited about him after I had already finished writing my article. Since then, he's continued to mash and has gained 3% on his roster rate. Based on this, it's worth doing a full write-up. Fitz-Gerald was a 5th-round pick last year out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, which is a baseball factory whose alumni include Roman Anthony, Jesus Luzardo, Coby Mayo, and Anthony Rizzo, as well as other less notable professional players, including older brother Hunter Fitz-Gerald who is a prospect in the Mariners system. In addition to his brother, Devin also has bloodlines through his father, Todd (the head coach of the Stoneman Douglas team), who also played baseball in college.
The youngest Fitz-Gerald appears to be the best of the Fitz-Gerald bunch, earning an over-slot $900,000 bonus to lure him away from an NC State commitment. Heading into the draft, our scouts ranked him at 187 and had this to say:
Fitz-Gerald put together one of the better summers this cycle, climbing his way up the ranks. A certain tool doesn't stick out in his profile, but rather it's a smattering of fringe-average and average tools that tie the puzzle together. He's on the smaller side of the spectrum, but he's got good defensive chops and should profile best as a second baseman. A switch-hitter, Fitz-Gerald possesses good bat speed from either side and utilizes the whole field to his advantage. He draws more walks than strikeouts and his approach is stellar, though there is some swing-and-miss present. Overall, this is a well-rounded profile that has some upside.
The exceptional approach continues to be there, but the swing and miss has evaporated, with just a 12.9% strikeout rate to go with a 10.6% swinging strike rate and a 77.1% overall contact rate. While we didn't grade him, MLB Pipeline gave him a 50 hit tool with 40 power and 45 run. So far, the power is better than advertised, with Fitz-Gerald posting a .306 ISO on the year with five home runs in just 19 games, including a stretch of four straight games with a HR. Fitz-Gerald lifts and pulls the ball a good amount as well. Plive+ is a big fan of everything Fitz-Gerald is doing, and Smada wrote him up as a Complex riser last week.
Why To Think Twice
Fitz-Gerald is an older prep prospect who will be turning 20 in August. While his debut was delayed due to a hamstring injury, he is advanced in both age and baseball IQ (particularly as a coach's son) and likely needs a promotion to Single-A to be effectively challenged. The lack of upside in the scouting reports post-draft does lend some doubt to how much long-term fantasy impact he can provide.
Final Thoughts
We need to see Fitz-Gerald get a promotion and continue to get into his power to get too excited, but he's essentially showing everything you want to see since his debut. I've added him in several leagues over the last week and would encourage you to do the same in mid-sized leagues.

Why To Pick Up
In January, Kyle and I did a mock draft on our podcast of the top J15 signees. While Fenelon didn't get drafted in the first 10, he was the first of my honorable mentions. On the podcast, I cited the Brewers exceptional track record with international signees in recent years (Jackson Chourio, Jesus Made, Luis Pena, Jefferson Quero, Yophery Rodriguez, Jose Anderson, Filippo Di Turi, Jadheir Areinamo, Luis Lara, and last week's writeup Handelfry Encarnacion) and state that if I had to bet on a Brewers signing this year it would be Kenny Fenelon. For me, it was all about the power/speed upside. Matt Thompson touched on it in our FYPD rankings (where he came in at #67):
Fenelon has an exciting power and speed blend and has already shown he can pull the ball for power. He’s a good athlete that could stick in center and the plus speed should translate well on the bases.
Fangraphs (60 raw power, 60 speed) and MLB Pipeline (55 power, 55 run) agree with Matt's assessment. It's also worth noting that Fenelon was the highest-paid Brewer's signee this year at $1.3M and, according to Pipeline, has learned English (which will help his transition stateside) and has tremendous off-the-field makeup. Combine all that with a hot start (3/8 with a HR and a walk) in his first two games, and Fenelon was the easy choice for the first DSL bat to pick up off the wire.
Why To Think Twice
As much as evaluators agree on his upside, they also agree on his hit tool risk. Matt had this to say in his aforementioned report:
There are some hit tool concerns here and reports indicate he has a significant amount of swing and miss in the profile, especially against breaking balls.
Both Fangraphs (40) and Pipeline (45) agree with the power and speed grades. Fenelon has also been caught stealing in his only stolen base attempt.
Final Thoughts
Obviously, it is ridiculously early to make any judgments based on a DSL player's performance. Still, I already liked Fenelon quite a bit coming into this season, and his hot start has me picking up a few shares. Feel free to join me, but be ready to pivot quickly if things go sour.
