After speculating on prospects' impact on the 2025 MLB season, we now return to our regularly formatted programming. As always, I get a feel for how I can zig where others are zagging with this column. Sometimes that means shooting for low-rostered underdogs like Caleb Durbin or fliers like Nolan Gorman, but it can also just lead to me calling out value misalignments in some of the game's bigger names.
Is a star currently dressed in "just solid" attire? Is there a superstar waiting in the shadows of present "star" value? Wyatt Langford is widely understood to be a star, but some seem unsure of his trajectory moving forward. Is this a fantasy cornerstone, or just a steady, top-50 sort of bat? And then there's All-Star snub Cristopher Sanchez, the pitching equivalent of Rodney Dangerfield.
Even after establishing himself as a top-20 pitcher in 2025 and a top-10 arm over the last month, Mr. Sanchez still gets no respect! While people are slowly waking up, the AS ignorance does indicate there's still a perceived value gap here. We'll touch on another element of consistency in Ryan Pepiot, who (like Cristopher Sanchez) has more Quality Starts than Tarik Skubal, and whether it's equally as sustainable.
Knowing your league mates' thoughts and value structure is critical, of course. But suppose you can identify these perceived value gaps and pounce on them. In that case, these become relatively easy acquisitions to pull off when it comes to fantasy baseball, especially when compared to the idea of plucking a 1% rostered player and having him carry your squad to a championship. Of course, any reader of this humble column will reap the rewards of both, but I'm just saying...
