The All-Star break made for a short week in professional baseball, but America’s pastime is now back to full swing. To see who stood out, take a look at the latest weekly Report Card (all statistics courtesy of Baseball Reference, Baseball Savant, TJStats, Fangraphs and Milb.com, updated as of the conclusion of play on July 20):

Called Up:

  • Francisco Alvarez, C (NYM): As highlighted in last week’s article, Alvarez has still struggled some with making contact, but has been tearing the cover off the ball since his demotion back on June 22. The Mets will now look for the catcher to keep this power barrage going with the big league club, and help them chase down Philadelphia for NL East bragging rights. Given the relative weakness of the catcher position for fantasy, he seems like a solid add right now in all formats, unless you have one of the top fantasy backstops rostered already.
  • Shay Whitcomb, 3B/OF (HOU): Shay “Taxi Squad” Whitcomb has been called up once again by the Astros, with Isaac Paredes potentially needing an injury list stay because of a hamstring injury. Regular at-bats are far from guaranteed for Whitcomb, as we have seen in his previous stints with Houston, so wait and see what kind of playing time he receives (and how well he performs) before making an addition in redraft.
  • Zebby Matthews, P (MIN): Matthews made his return from injury on Saturday with the Twins, but it was far from triumphant. He was hit and hit often, conceding eight base knocks and five earned runs in just four innings of work. He did strike out six, though, and should still be considered a buy-low candidate for dynasty, especially.
  • Michael McGreevy, P (STL): To give Matthew Liberatore a bit more time off before his next outing, McGreevy was called upon to step in for the Cardinals on Monday. The right-hander has looked solid in both the minors and majors this season. And this latest audition, the eloquent Darren “Doc” Eisenhauer, has just penned a compelling case for McGreevy as a strong dynasty buy, which everyone should read.
