Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 20 yr
Height: 6-5
Weight: 204 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Bigger than his listed weight. Tall and broad. Big shoulders. Strong thighs. Filled out.

Hit: Mirror-image stance with more pre-pitch bat movement from the right side. Stands open and slightly crouched. Keeps his knees tight. Moderate leg kick as he steps into the ball. Wide base at impact. Inconsistent bat path, but often upward. Looks more comfortable from the left side. Plus bat speed that drives balls to the outfield when he makes good contact. Most contact is to the pull-side. Flashes some understanding of the strike zone, but is overly aggressive at the plate and tries to kill the ball too often. Shows a demonstrable tendency to get under the ball, which has led to a significant amount of flyouts. Struggles with off-speed stuff down, which is unsurprising given his height. Strikeouts will be a significant part of his game; has so far struck out at a 46% clip across two minor league seasons. Possesses the underlying ability to see growth with the tool, but he needs to tone down his approach and let his pitch come to him. Grade: 30

Power: Plus-plus raw power from both sides; puts on shows during BP. Already uses his hips well and has plus bat speed. Power shows up in-game, but at the expense of his hit tool. Grade: 60

Field: Gets low on rollers and shows enough range to get under routine fly balls. May lose a step if he adds additional bulk, which could relegate him to LF or 1B. Moves well enough to fit in either position, but his sheer size may work best at 1B. Grade: 50

Arm: Strong arm that plays in RF. Has a low release point. Throws were thrown with good cary and on target in limited looks. Grade: 55

Run: Strong arm that plays in RF. Has a low release point. Throws were thrown with good cary and on target in limited looks. Grade: 40

Overall: Garcia's huge raw power is his calling card, but his approach and aggressiveness at the plate will hinder his ability to get to it at higher levels. He offers intriguing upside, but there's a very real possibility he'll never get out of the low minors. He's played a total of six games in the last two seasons and simply needs reps. He'll be Rule V eligible in 2021.
