Aug 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 195 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Tall with a physically mature body. Strong throughout. High waisted and long levered. Larger than his listed size. Lacks projection. High baseball intelligence and has a desire to succeed.

Hit: Stands upright and open with his weight on his back foot. Keep his right elbow high and hands back. Some pre-pitch bat waggle and hand motion. Uses a moderate leg kick as he loads. Thrusts himself into the pitch. Takes big cuts, with above-average or better bat speed. Ball jumps off the bat when he connects. Lacks bat control and too often makes poor contact, even in batting practice. Swing can get long and it's an inconsistent bat path. Has an aggressive approach and a tendency to overswing. Looks at his best when he does not try to swing for the fences. His long arms allow him to cover the outside of the plate, and he does show some feel for going the other way. Strikeouts will likely be a part of his game until he scales back his all-or-nothing approach. Grade: 30

Power: Plus-plus raw power, particularly to the pull side. Capable of hitting monster home runs in BP. Whippy swing. Power presently plays below-average; balls mostly hit to the gaps. Falls victim to free-swinging, often resulting in poor contact. In his limited DSL debut, he recorded substantially more groundouts than flyouts, which is a genuine concern given the level of competition and his inclination to swing for the fences. Grade: 50

Field: Unrefined in the field. Tracks the ball and moves well enough for his size. Has below-average foot speed. Probably fits best in LF. May get looks at 1B. Grade: 45

Arm: Strong arm with good carry from the outfield. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Accurate in limited looks from his circuit days. Plays in RF. Grade: 55

Run: Recorded below-average times while on the circuit as an amateur. Unable to get looks since signing. Grade: 40

Overall: Castillo received early buzz as a potential top guy for the 2018 J2 class because of his physical maturity and massive raw power, but ended up signing for $350,000. Those traits still exist, but there are genuine concerns about his ability to make consistent contact and questions about where he'll fit in the field. The power is huge, but he's yet to get to it, and there's a reasonable likelihood he never will. He has more potential than an organizational player, but it's going to take significant time and effort to get there.
