Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Joe Drake

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: B/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA, PHI
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Built like an average middle infielder. Lean up top, thicker legs and butt. Looks athletic. Mostly filled out, not much room to add more weight. Live body that moves well. Good athlete with the quickness and reflexes to play up the middle.

Hit: Switch hitter. Left: Stands upright with hands at the eyes and bat pointed directly back over the shoulder. Moderate bend in the rear knee, front foot extended for a wider base and open half a step. Coils moderately with a waist-high leg kick and steps toward the pitcher to get to launch position. Right: Similar stance, deeper knee bend, hands sit lower, rest bat on shoulder. Straight on setup. Coils a touch less, smaller leg kick, everything less pronounced, less smooth - probably a natural lefty. Hands stay back allowing him to adjust when fooled. Not super selective, swings at pitchers' pitches. Gets beat by velo and good spin. Visibly frustrated when things don't go his way. Seems to alternate between passive and aggressive. Earns walks and gets hard contact when he's patient. Grade: 50

Power: Fairly level swing plane. Below-average bat speed. Will run into a few, but not someone who will drive the ball out of the park. More a gap power, doubles guy. Legs are good enough to stretch a single into 2 here and there. Grade: 30

Field: Actions are smooth and natural, but prone to mistakes (multiple dropped balls on tags); Gets himself into position; good, soft hands Grade: 50

Arm: Able to throw on the run and from odd angles. Ball is firm with solid carry. Enough to play the left side but nothing to salivate over. Combo of functionality and strength should be above-average overall. Grade: 55

Run: Smooth runner. Big, quick strides; gets up to speed quickly. Can and will go 1 to 3 on a single. 4.27 on a H-1B. Grade: 50

Overall: Athletic, glove-first middle infielder who was overmatched in his first MLB season (R5 guy forced up early). Inconsistent approach oscillating between passive and aggressive exacerbated his poor swing decisions. Whiffed often against good pitching, especially spin. Switch hitter who looks more natural as a lefty, but doesn't look like he'll hit for much power from either side due to swing path and lack of pop. Speed and defense are carrying tools, if you had to choose. Ceiling is below-average regular at short, floor is probably once a week MI and defensive replacement. MLB defender with AAA bat.
