Mar 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 21 yr
Height: 5-9
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Average height. Lean frame. Quick-twitch athlete. Fun to watch in the field and in the box.

Hit: Debuted a new swing during 2019 and carried it into 2020 Spring Training. Stands upright, legs shoulder-width apart. Bat stays vertical, hands at his chest prior to loading. Big leg kick as he steps into the pitch. Looks more comfortable and stance allows him to get to the ball quicker at its best. He can be out of sync at times. He has above-average bat speed and an upward bat path that produces fly balls to the grass. Aggressive at the plate; free swinger that strikes out far too often. Has stuck out over 30% across three minor league seasons. Pitch recognition remains a weakness but he can crush mistakes. Gets the ball in the air with regularity when he connects and has so far produced more flyouts than groundouts. Has the speed to beat out grounders to the left side. Grade: 40

Power: Average or better raw power, primarily to the pull side. Gets the ball in the air during games because of the bat path and started turning doubles into HR during the 2019 season. Still mostly a gap hitter, but offers additional projection as he continues to add strength and bulk. Has a quick bat and already creates a good amount of leverage. Grade: 45

Field: Has experience with both SS and 2B. Has good footwork and moves well laterally. Twitchy in the field and can get to a lot of balls. Has above-average or better range. Does a good job covering the bag while playing 2B and can turn the double play. Tracks fly balls well and could potentially play in the OF. Could be a plus defender at the keystone. Grade: 55

Arm: Above-average arm strength, but it plays up because of his quick and fluid transfers. Enough arm strength to get the ball across the diamond, but it might fit best at 2B, where he's starting to look like a natural. Throws from a sidearm slot when making the routine throw, but can reach back for more. Grade: 55

Run: Timed between 4.08 and 4.13 down the line from the right side. Legitimate base stealing threat, but can be overly aggressive on the basepaths. Can turn a double into a triple. Grade: 70

Overall: Barley went undrafted in the most recent Rule V draft, but he has the underlying tools and athleticism to be a future big leaguer. He's notably raw at the plate, and will be a slow burn as a prospect, but he has the look of a utility-type and enough tools to always suggest he could be something more. Even as a utility-type, it's a high-risk profile, primarily because time and the organization's depth are working against him.
