Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 210 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 Round 2 CBB
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Above-average height. Sturdy build that has filled out since signing. Average upper-body strength.

Hit: Stands crouched with his hands back. Some pre-pitch movement. Gets low in his stance with a moderate leg kick as he loads that he uses as his timing mechanism. Linear swing that regularly barrels the ball, but it's mostly average bat speed and the ball lacks impact off the bat. His approach is designed to put balls in play, which he does frequently. Has above-average bat-to-ball skills which helps him fight off a lot of pitches. He shows a solid eye at the plate and generally knows when to lay off on pitches out of the zone, but he does not walk often. Conversely, his bat-to-ball skills limit his strikeouts; he's consistently kept his strikeout rate around 12%. He would be better served to cut down on his swing frequency at the plate and wait for a pitch to drive. The tool currently plays below where it could with further refinement at the plate. Grade: 50

Power: Miranda shows above-average raw power, particularly to the pull side, but his approach limits his power output during games. He's a contact over power hitter, although he did start putting more balls in the air during the 2019 season. He has a swing that could create a good amount of leverage, but he needs to better utilize his lower half and learn to rotate his hips. Grade: 40

Field: Moves well laterally and displays solid footwork, but it's mostly average range. He's a heads up fielder and makes the routine plays at 2B and 3B, but he's not a standout in the field. Has some utility value with his recent experience at SS, too. Grade: 50

Arm: Above-average arm strength that shows good carry across the diamond. Comfortable making throws from the left side of the infield and on the turn at 2B. Mostly on target in looks. Arm may work best at 2B. Grade: 55

Run: Fringe-average runner with times down the line from the right side between 4.33 and 4.38. Hustles out of the box. Not a threat to steal. Grade: 45

Overall: Miranda lacks the power teams covet, but he does everything else well enough that he looks like a future big leaguer. There's some untapped potential with his hit tool, but it may not be enough for him to get starter reps if and when he gets the call. He offers some defensive versatility, and at the moment it seems like his realistic ceiling is that of a backup/utility type. There's value in his profile, but it's worth noting he went unprotected and undrafted in the 2020 Rule V draft.
