Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Russ Peters

Age: 23 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Compact, athletic build. Thick lower half. Has grown bigger and stronger with maturity and a pro regimen.

Hit: Sets up with back elbow up and hands in at neck level, wide base with legs set more than shoulder width apart. Weight shifts to back foot with noticeable leg kick during load, swing is smooth and fairly quiet. Despite the swing aesthetics Carpio lacks an advanced feel for hitting and how to most effectively handle different pitches in different locations. Battles at the plate and has shown an adept ability to draw a walk. Grade: 45

Power: Carpio has grown bigger and stronger over the years, allegedly adding 25 pounds of muscle. Also has geared his swing to generate more loft which briefly resulted in a flash of more pop. At this point that flash of power appears to be an aberration, until we see more consistent power output Luis is more of a singles and doubles hitter. Grade: 30

Field: Polished and smooth in the field. Very good lateral movement to get to balls on either side of his position with a quick first step. Looks very comfortable in the dirt. Sure handed with quick actions and seamless transitions. Enough glove to be an asset anywhere in the infield. Grade: 55

Arm: Arm plays best at 2B. Passable at SS. Lacks the zip and play making ability desired from SS or 3B Grade: 50

Run: Short, choppy steps. Ability to move laterally in the field outshines the ability to be an asset on the basepaths. Instincts and smarts to steal bases but will be challenged by advanced catchers. Grade: 50

Overall: Watching Carpio play leaves you wanting and hoping for just a little bit more. He looks the part of a big league regular, but it just hasn't translated into the batter's box. If Carpio can come around to hit with either more consistent average or pop he can attain this ceiling, but currently Luis projects as a utility infielder who can make plays in the field and get on base when his number is called.
