Physical Description: Ideal pitchers build; sturdy potential inning eater. XL frame: every bit of listed 6'3<94> 225 pounds. Broad shoulders that slightly slope; average upper body and core; high waist and long limbs. Lean, but strong lower half. Above-average athleticism. Impressive work ethic and leadership qualities. Minimal physical projection remains.
Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup; drop and drive operation. High 3/4 arm slot with above-average arm speed and moderate effort in the delivery. Above-average deception from letter high leg kick and hand break; claws a bit behind the back during long arm path. Average stride; good extension. Frame and high arm slot generate a natural downward plane. Slight inverted-W on plant. Slight head whack; recoil after release yields occasional hard landings first-base side. Good rhythm. Easy, fluid and athletic motions that are repeated fairly well.
Fastball: Plus offering; high spin rate; sits 93-96 t98. Explodes out of the hand and gets on hitters quick; arm speed and deception pad perceived velocity. Features angle and modest life; occasional arm-side run; riding life when he climbs the ladder. Generates weak contact low and overpowering whiffs in and out of the zone. Solid average command. Curveball: High spin rate power curveball; sits 79-83 with tight rotation,11/5 depth and sharp bite. Manipulates the movement occasionally showing more slurvy break with darting action and tilt. Backdoors the 11/5 hammer early in counts to steal strikes and buries it low as a spike pitch for swing and miss. Tough on LHB, absolute murder on RHB as a put-away offering. Exceptional feel; above-average command. Grade: 60
Changeup: Firm high-80s off-speed. Gaining feel; thrown with conviction while maintaining arm speed. Features late tumble and modest arm-side fade. Predominately utilized against LHB. Elicits moderate swing and miss and off-barrel weak contact. Offering has made significant gains with pro instruction; projects solid average. Grade: 50
Control and Command: Above-average control with potential solid average command. Shows advanced feel and pitchability. Polished strike thrower that fills the zone. Attacks all four quads; adjusts the eye level to avoid predictable location; sets up secondaries well; shows confidence pitching backwards. FB consistently around the plate; can land or expand with CB and CH. Focused, competitive mound presence. CH maturation and increased usage is paramount to avoid predictable sequencing. Overall: A surprise over-slot second day draftee in 2019, Allan has thrived developmentally under Mets tutelage. Blessed with size, composure and commanding presence, Allan's well rounded arsenal is anchored by an imposing plus FB/CB combo. Expect impact innings, strikeouts and leadership from this big right-hander. Overall there's frontline SP upside, with a solid mid-rotation role a more likely outcome.
