Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Average height but gangly build with long arms and legs. High waist, above average athlete. At nearly 24 I'm not sure how likely another 10-15 pounds of projection is, but there's definitely room for growth.

Mechanics: Easy loose delivery, with a slight leg lift, that features a moderate hitch before foot plant. Delivers from a three quarters arm action with an average release height on the fastball. He puts his long limbs to good use getting above average extension to the plate. Not really a drop and drive delivery, more of tall and fall with good balance and a whippy arm keeping him on time.

Fastball: Plus velocity sitting 94-96 mph ruching 99 mph multiple times across a handful of starts. In consistent movement, cuts his fastball too much to command it consistently elevated. Misses bats due to his velocity and late action on his fastball. Lacks average command however and will miss locations badly. With a little refinement Vizcaino has the ability to see his fastball really play in a relief role. Grade: 50

Slider: Sits 82-86 mph with slurvy break, looking almost like a harder curveball. Will get some swings and misses but mostly there as a change of pace for his fastball+off-speed combination. Grade: 40

Changeup: Plus pitch with nasty drop and tumble. Gets above average armside fade and sells it with the same arm speed and release point as fastball. The definition of a Bugs Bunny changeup. Sits 87-91 mph with heavy armside break, KC area the pitch well in all matchups, difficult take as it's mistaken for his fastball out of the hand. Will need to see how the pitch plays against high level competition, but should be a weapon in a bullpen role. Grade: 60

Control and Command: Struggles with his ability to consistently land his fastball to the desired spot. This in turn has led to fringe-average control of the zone despite excellent feel for his changeup. Fringe average strike thrower with below average command. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: The combination of velocity and a true swing and miss offspeed make Vizcaino a perfect fit for a pen role long term. Lacks the ability to command his stuff for long stretches and his changeup first approach fits well in the modern game of three batter minimums. A relief role long term that the organization showed belief in by adding him to the 40 man prior to the 2020 Rule Five. Late bloomer with a major league profile.
