Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-4

Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 13
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall physical specimen former division one QB at Oklahoma. Long legs, high waisted, physically strong, muscular but not bulky. Light projection for ten pounds of muscle.

Hit: Sets up square to the pitcher, with slight bend in his knees and waist. Slight toe tap, with a longer, steeper bat path. Average bat speed coupled with his bat path leads to trouble with elevated velocity and fastballs at 94 mph or over. Longer limbs make it harder for players of his size to stay compact which is why some of his swing and miss is not wholly unexpected. Thomas does however show an uncanny ability to stay on time during his swing due to his plus athleticism and body control. His bat to ball ability is below average with plenty of zone miss in the profile. Questionable plate discipline further complicates matters. Poor hit tool with strong quality of contact. Grade: 30

Power: Easy all fields power he doesn't have to sell out for. Despite contact issues power does play in game. Shows the ability to drive the ball with very little effort to all parts of the park. Natural loft in his swing and longer path allow him to kill fastballs on the outer half if he can catch up to it. Has produced a .200+ Isolated Slugging across 400+ minor league games and despite his hit tool issues presents massive power upside. Grade: 60

Field: Above average fielder with strong reads off the bat and clean routes. Above average runner with long strides. Could conceivably play centerfield but seems best suited for right due better than average but not quite plus speed. Showed little trouble making routine plays across a number of looks. Does a good job staying in front of the ball and taking the right chances. Grade: 55

Arm: Above average arm with good on line carry on throws to the infield. You'd expect more arc from a pass first college quarterback perhaps but it's a good arm that keeps runners honest, but doesn't have the strength and distance to be a true weapon from the outfield. Grade: 55

Run: Clocks consistent run times in the above average to average range. Utilizes running ability in the field with his long strides and athletic movements. Not a burner but has enough speed to push for extra bases and put pressure on the defense when on. Not a great base stealer but will pick his spots and can be effective. All of his skills culminate in an above average run tool. Grade: 55

Overall: Despite being an "old" prospect at 26, Thomas' college football career coupled with the pandemic gives reason to cut him some slack. Overall it's a tooled up profile that had a productive 2019 in the upper minors (.334 wOBA 108 wRC+ in AA), and in a less talent rich organization Thomas may have seen some MLB time in 2020. His inability to make contact with consistency really drags down the entire profile. However his combination of fielding ability and offensive upside due to his plus power make him a perfect fit for a long term platoon role. Whether or not he gets there will depend on whether he can make enough contact to be a major leaguer. High end up and down profile.
