Physical Description: Trim athletic build. Wiry frame with room to add more muscle without hindering mobility. Does look a bit bigger than his listed weight of 175 pounds.
Delivery & Mechanics: Standard 3/4 delivery. Low effort, repeatable mechanics. Starts facing offset from the plate towards the third base side. Hands are chest high and raise up to his head as his leg come up. Knee reaches chest height at the peak of the balance point. Stays tall as he extends out. Arm can be late during this process. Good separation. Finishes closed off towards the first base side.
Fastball: 4-seamer that sits 93-95 and tops 98. Above average velo with average vertical movement and a touch of arm-side run. Good raw spin but inconsistent axis and efficiency limit pitch profile currently. Plays plus at times but lack of feel for mechanics holds the pitch back massively. Will miss bats and register whiffs but oftentimes that's because it's the only offering hitters will swing at. Grade: 55
Curveball: 79-83 with very good depth. Elite raw spin up around 3000 RPM translates, resulting in sharp vertical drop. Tunnels very well with fastball and hitters have a lot of trouble seeing the spin from his release. Will use in any count but mechanical issues will cause some bad misses. Should be a plus offering though CB results being largely dependent on FB command limits current upside. Grade: 60
Changeup: 84-86 with sharp fading action. Good arm speed and axis gives above average movement to the arm-side. Good feel for pronating and mechanics actually look a bit cleaner when throwing the CH. Will use to generate weak contact as well as put hitters away. Potential for an above average offering against both LHHs and RHHs. Grade: 55
Control and Command: Mechanical issues cause regular trouble for Chalmers in finding and staying in the zone. He'll yank fastballs into the dirt and pop curves out making his catcher jump up, and vice versa. He's been able to register a respectable amount of strikeouts through being effectively wild, though he's still never recorded a K/BB higher than 2.0. Surprisingly has shown solid feel with the CH and might benefit from throwing it a bit more. Control: 40 | Command: 30
Overall: Chalmers was always going to be a longer developmental project because of his command issues, and undergoing TJS in 2018 didn't help his outlook. Now more than two years later, he still shows some drastic mechanical inefficiencies that severely detract from his pure stuff. When he's on, Chalmers flashes three above average or better offerings, but the problem is that he's rarely on for an extended period of time. The stuff is worth taking a gamble on, though at this point now taking up a 40-man roster spot, he's going to have to develop very quickly and prove himself if he wants a big league role.
