Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Tall and high waisted with long legs and arms. Sloping shoulders. Large presence on the mound that seems to go beyond his 6-foot-3 frame. Has grown into frame since signing from Venezuela in 2016. Upper body still has room for growth but frame is a bit on the slender side so he won't be undergoing a radical transformation. Close to physical maturity. No significant injury history.

Mechanics: Splits the rubber. Long arm action from a traditional three quarters arm slot. Whippy arm action, repeatable but inconsistent release point sometimes telegraphs breaking pitches. Traditional windup features a big leg lift that he uses to swing back slightly and drive forward. Breaks his hands a little early than ideal because he's not fully driving toward home yet. Short strider at foot plant, swings his body around on a good leg block. More tall and fall.

Fastball: 94-96 mph, experienced a velocity bump in 2019. Jumps out of his hand thanks to long arms. Able to elevate when needed and is effective in the upper quadrant, but has a penchant for working more east-west. Likes to keep it away from RHH. Sinking action when low in the zone, tough to barrel up and induces plenty of weak contact. Easily his best pitch and something he's been able to get by with at the lower levels. Grade: 60

Curveball: 79-81 mph. 11-5 break with bite at the end. Noticed a tendency to release it slightly higher than curveball and hitters were geared for it. Deploys it vs. RHH but despite break can leave it hanging. Flashes above-average at its best. Grade: 50

Changeup: 85-86 mph. Has some fade but generally lacks enough movement to make it a true strikeout offering. Maintains arm speed with it, deploys it to both-handed hitters. Lacking the command to place it where he wants. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Gomez knows how to keep the pitches on the fringes of the strike zone, enough to entice hitters to swing, especially at his heater. But he has a tendency to miss glove side quite often with all his offerings and often resorts to the fastball to put away hitters. Hasn't shown ability to attack all four quadrants yet. Control: 50 | Command: 40

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 Round 4
RuleV: On 40-man

Overall: One of the many players who came out of the lost season looking different than we last saw him, Cody Poteet now reps a major league average fastball, at least per velo. The 26 year old averages 93.9 mph instead of the fringe-average offering from the past and it's done a good job of playing up in the zone with good arm-side run that masks its lack of rise. He rounds out his arsenal with two high-spin breakers in the slider and curveball, the former of which he uses almost exclusively with RHB. He then tackles LHB primarily with FB/CH. It's a straightforward windup that has some effort at release and he's done a good job with command despite the long arm action. He's shown flashes of being a backend rotation piece, which is a major success already for someone who was headed toward an org depth label.

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Overall: The most expensive international signing from the Nats' 2019-20 J2 period, Lara is an 18 year old Venezuelan righty with a sturdy, 6-foot-4 frame. He's well built with a strong lower half and clear room for growth in the upper body. It's a traditional delivery with low effort and above-average arm speed. At signing the fastball sat 92-94, showing good zip especially in the upper half of the zone and it jumps out of his hand. Should expect to add two more ticks with proper conditioning and added mass. 11-5 curveball flashes above-average with late bite. More information is needed about his complete arsenal and what the command/control looks like over an extended period of time. Put him on your watch list for now and check back at the end of the year.

Feb 2021 Report

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 24 yr
Height: 5-7
Weight: 197 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/S
Acquired: 2018 Round 3
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: A short second baseman (listed only an inch taller than Jose Altuve) with a stocky build. Thick legs, short torso. Compact build with little room for growth.

Hit: Crouches in the set up with a wide base, bat resting on shoulders with hands at neck level and remains motionless until pitcher windup. Uses a toe tap for timing. Has a level swing plane with average bat speed. Cortes relies extensively on upper body and, specifically, his hands, to produce all contact with his compact stroke. He's an aggressive hitter with above-average bat control, often spoiling borderline pitches. Has a tendency to expand at times. Often gets on top of the ball and pulls most of his batted balls but flashes the ability to wait on a breaking pitch and send it to the opposite field. Much better vs. RHP. Grade: 50

Power: Cortes doesn't engage his lower half so his game power is severely diminished. More of a line drive hitter that lacks lift in his swing. Occasionally his barrel control will let him turn on pitches to his pull side for some pop. Grade: 40

Field: Below average second baseman who'll make his fair share of errors because of lackluster glove. Reliable for routine plays but won't make the five-star plays. Also a little bit of an oddity as he is ambidextrous and plays the infield throwing righty and on the rare occasion he's in the outfield he throws lefty. Grade: 40

Arm: Arm suitable only for second base. Lacks ideal carry on his throws, liability when he's used in left field. Grade: 45

Run: Choppy runner, slow out of the box, below average runner underway. Poor instincts on the base paths. Grade: 45

Overall: Cortes is a bat first second baseman who battles at the plate but lacks a plus hit tool or plus power tool to help carry the profile. He'll need to either drastically work to improve the fielding or the hit tool to carve out staying power at the highest level.

Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2019 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: High-waisted, sinewy build with long legs. Clear present room for added mass and muscle. Square shoulders. Ideal frame ratio with strong legs, tapered chest to the waist.

Hit: Switch hitter. Very similar hitting mechanics on both sides of the plate. Open stance, slight bend at the knees, hands out in front at neck level. Begins movement with an inward leg lift that has knee pointed at catcher, rocks himself back and then uncorks. Efficient trigger, minimal hand movement, linear hand path to the ball. It's an aesthetically pleasing swing, compact and easily repeatable no matter what parts of the zone the ball crosses. Limited in-game video shows him sometimes turning to a level swing when he's caught off guard but routinely shows an uppercut swing in BP. Hands can stay back and adjust on the fly. It's an advanced swing for his age. Grade: 45

Power: Present doubles power, only exhibits power to his pull side from either LHB/RHB. He's flashed the extension for home runs, even if they aren't currently leaving the yard. Fringe average raw in BP. Added strength that will come with age and proper conditioning could unlock average power in due time as he has the swing for it. Grade: 40

Field: Hands are quick, especially with the transfers. Able to read bad hops and adjust. Throws from low 3/4 slot, relies heavily on upper body to produce strength behind throws. Grade: 50

Arm: Fringe average, doesn't get a lot behind his throws even when he sets up for it. Arm can play at short but better suited for second base. Grade: 45

Run: Good jumps out of the box especially when hitting lefty. Average acceleration. Won't be a base clogger. Grade: 50

Overall: One of the biggest J2 bonuses in 2019, Lorenzo has the foundation for an exciting profile once he physically matures. His swing is smooth with little effort yet he connects with authority. There's risk of shifting to second base down the line but he should be given a chance to develop further at shortstop in the meantime.

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Overall: Alexander Ramirez has been hidden from the public for going on two years now making up to date reporting difficult to do. He only has DSL experience under his belt. Early footage from just before he signed shows a gangly, long-limbed frame with easy room to fill out in the torso. He lacks ass so the hips and legs are limited in growth. While showcasing for teams it was apparent that power was the appeal here. It's an easy lofted swing with few moving parts and in BP footage he's shown it to all fields. He likes to get extended for the power, too. It's a long trigger as he gears up for swings and that usually raises questions about how he handles velocity. On the field, he is smooth as he glides toward the ball using his long strides. Ramirez had a fringe average arm that needed reps on accuracy to his target. Like many wiry J2 signees, Ramirez has a lot of room for growth in all areas of the game and a debut stateside with a potential Low-A appearance will help inform our understanding much better.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 185 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Medium frame that's close to physical max already. Well proportioned with a study build. Strong, thick thighs. Likely 10 pounds above listed weight.

Hit: Plenty of moving parts. Stands tall in the box with hands behind his head and he peers at the pitcher just over his right shoulder. Sometimes uses a pronounced hand waggle as he waits for the pitch. Uses a very pronounced leg kick to begin his movement, knee almost hits his chest. It's a long load and his upper body is noticeably further behind his lower half. Level swing with a touch of loft but sometimes opts for a slash and dash approach. Improving plate discipline, often spits on breaking pitches that are close. Loves dropping the bat head on breakers. Has shown ability to shorten swing and still barrel a pitch but his pronounced leg kick, load and wrap make it so he needs to stay in sync to see results. Sees the ball significantly better vs. RHP. Grade: 45

Power: Power comes from extension rather than strength and as a result he excels at hitting the low pitch for power. Drops his shoulder when he extends, will limit his ability to turn on pitches in the upper half of the zone. Grade: 45

Field: Smooth actions in the outfield, gets good reads, able to play right or left field, but enough in the profile to remain in right field for now. Grade: 55

Arm: Has enough arm for right, gets good carry on his throws and will be an asset. Grade: 55

Run: Average runner, clocked at 4.15 home to first. Good acceleration but short steps and stands a bit too upright when gunning it which slows him down. Needs improvement on the base paths, poor instincts with stealing. Grade: 50

Overall: Martinez performed well in High-A in 2019 considering he was still just 21 back then. Granted, take any Cal League stats, especially power numbers, with a grain of salt. Martinez is one of those prospects that shouldn't have any surprises left in the tank - he's a medium floor, low ceiling player who can carve out a role as a strong side platoon bat with enough defensive ability to stick around a big league club.

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Mature body for his age. Sturdy build with thick thighs, 6-foot-2 frame lends to room for muscle in the upper half but fairly filled out already.

Hit: Open, wide stance. Weight on back leg preload. Small hand waggle at the letters. Big hitch as he cocks that slows down his attack on the ball, leaves him susceptible to velocity up. Uppercut loft in the swing, tries to do the most damage to the pull side and leaves himself open on the outside. Tendency to lean in and chase soft stuff away and a penchant for low ball swings too. Sees the ball much better versus LHP, is at his best when he stays back. Grade: 30

Power: Ramos' strongest trait, it goes far when he connects. Loft in the swing makes him a power threat for any pitch thrown his way, but better at barreling pitches in the lower quadrant of the zone. Has flashed average raw power in BP, hit tool needs to take a big step to translate the results in game. Grade: 40

Field: Fringe average fielder. Had some second base reps at instructs in 2019 but looked poor. Has the arm for third base and will barely be able to cut it at the position. Grade: 40

Arm: Strong arm, good carry from the corner. Shows an average arm on throws where he's not max effort, potential for plus arm but need more looks. Grade: 50

Run: Choppy steps, below average runner under way. Not a part of his game and expected to slow down as he continues to pack on more muscle. Grade: 40

Overall: The Cuban-born Ramos needs some maturation in multiple areas of his game if he wants to climb higher than being depth for the team. Held his own in AZL debut but flaws in his swing were apparent. Has the body to grow into average game power but improvement in discipline needed. Future at first base possible if fielding does not improve and there are concerns about his bat playing there.

Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Eddy Almaguer

Age: 20 yr
Height: 5-11
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Medium frame, ordinary build. Room to fill out and get stronger, particularly in the lower half and arms. Athletic enough that added muscle won't compromise movements.

Hit: Quiet, motionless stance pre pitch, bend at the knees with slight crouch. Bat knob pointed away from body, bat resting parallel to the ground on shoulders. Uses a slight leg lift and toe tap to time the pitcher. Good hand eye. Trigger is quick but bat stays in the zone long where he's able to connect and maximize impact. Bat path isn't level but it does lack loft, has shown tendency to go all fields. Upper and lower body are slightly disjointed during rotation, leads to hips flying open at times and that'll expose him to advanced sequencing with off speed. As expected there's lots of room to improve for the teenager but this will ultimately be his best trait. Grade: 40

Power: Swing geared for line drives, not projected to be an impact power bat. Average raw in the cages but he gears up for it. Has flashed average game power to the pull side when he connects just right, but not expected to be a big part of his game unless mechanical changes are made. Grade: 40

Field: Played primarily second and shortstop in stateside debut in 2019. Projects better at second base where he's committed fewer errors than at short. Would be a fringe defender at the latter. Grade: 45

Arm: Average arm. Playable up the middle, better suited for second base. Lacks zip, could get beat out by quick runner if ball is deep in a hole. Grade: 50

Run: Quick out of the box, short strides, a danger to turn singles into doubles if fielder is sleeping. Has displayed good base stealing instincts early on, knows when to pick his spots. Though not projected to be a serious part of his game, enough to keep pitchers honest. Grade: 50

Overall: Rodriguez has a balanced profile and is trending in a positive direction with a chance to carve out time as a utility man on a second division team. Continued progress on his hit tool will unlock a little more potential. But as is, even at 19 he's looking like a success for a low level J2 signing.

Age: 18 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 175 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 IFA
RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Filled out, broad shoulders, thick lower half. Six-foot frame more bulked up than the typical J2 player at this stage, but it's not bad weight.

Hit: Upright stance, weight onto his back leg, hands near his ears, fairly quiet. Moderate leg kick to kickstart the core rotation. Small hitch and bat wrap that he uses for timing. Very aesthetically pleasing swing. Compact, keeps it in the upper half of the zone with uppercut loft at the finish. Limited looks make it impossible to pass judgement on ability to pick up spin, adjust mid at-bat and how he handles velo, but foundation looked promising. Grade: 30

Power: His best trait. Strong for his size, swing geared for impact in the front of the zone. Average raw power, projected to get to it more with added strength. Tendency to get more of it to his pull side as expected with a young player. Grade: 45

Field: Looked a little stiff in fielding drills, footwork lacking. Not a smooth transition from approaching the ball to transfer then throw. Still learning. Committed a fair amount of errors in DSL. Grade: 40

Arm: Fringe average, not a lot on his throws. Slings it from the side. Better suited for 2B. Grade: 45

Run: Limited looks, looks a little heavy footed. Speed is not his game. Mobile enough to not be a liability. Grade: 40

Overall: Tejeda is a bat first infielder with promising hit and power tools. He's got a really pretty swing and enough strength to go from a gap power bat to over-the-fence type. With enough reps he can improve the hit tool to help maximize the power and present as a second division second baseman.
