Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 25 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 230 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2017 Round 2
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall with broad shoulders. Thick thighs. Carries some extra weight in the core. Strong hands and forearms. Maxed out. Prototypical size for a 1B.

Hit: Open stance with a wide base, knees bent. Keeps his hands high and behind his head. Some pre-pitch body sway and bat movement. Moderate leg kick as he steps into the pitch. Wide base at impact. Average or better bat speed. Inconsistent bat path that tends to be upward; gets the ball in the air to the pull-side on pitches middle-to-up in the zone. Takes some big cuts. Has a good eye on pitches out of the zone, but struggles with offspeed stuff down. Shows good bat-to-ball skills and fights off pitches in the upper half of the zone, although he is often behind on velocity. Grade: 45

Power: Plus raw power that began to show up during games in 2019. Shows impressive ability during BP, particularly to the pull-side. Swing is designed to put balls in the air, but the bat path is inconsistent and he does not always make strong contact. Can muscle the ball out. There's substantial room for growth in the tool, but he's going to need to focus on driving the ball with more frequency if he wants to reach it. Already uses his lower-half well. Grade: 50

Field: Has soft hands at first. Keeps the ball in front of him. Limited lateral range, but he has good instincts and makes the routine plays. Shows good situational awareness at the bag. Grade: 50

Arm: Average arm strength with limited carry. Quick transfer and good awareness at the bag. Accurate throws to 2B and C in limited looks. Not a weapon, but does not need to be at 1B. Grade: 45

Run: Timed 4.41 down the line from the left side. Lumbers out of the box. Displays solid awareness on the basepaths. Grade: 30

Overall: Sheets' raw power is his best tool, but he's still working toward consistently unleashing it during games. He's good enough defensively to stick at 1B, but without improvement with the stick, he does not profile as anything more than a backup. He's on the 40-man roster and figures to get a look as positional depth in the next couple of seasons, but his ultimate upside will be determined by whether he can get to his power on a more consistent basis.
