Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 220 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 5
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Big, burly frame mostly filled out, but more projection to come due to his long levers. Imposing figure on the bump. Short arm action that operates out a 3/4 slot. Works very quickly in his delivery, albeit with some head whack and gets down the mound with ease.

Delivery & Mechanics: Traditional 3/4 arm slot with loose arm action and good arm speed. Generates good hip/shoulder separation that shows he's a good athlete. Needs to use his lower half better. Rotates somewhat violently in his delivery and needs to use hips more working efficiently. Plan leg lacks balance when it comes through and causes him to fall off towards first base. He'll probably have to fix some of this to be able to start long-term. Good enough athlete to believe he can make these fixes.

Fastball: Works primarily 90-94 with some arm side run, touching some 95 and 96 on occasion. Chance to sit in the mid-90s is not hard to project. Will locate to any part of the zone with plus command. Pitch seems to get on top of hitters due to his frame and quick delivery. Grade: 50

Curveball: Sitting 72-77, with a 12 to 6 break that has a big looping action. Command is fringy but creates good S/M potential when it's on. Currently a fourth pitch. Grade: 45

Slider: 79-83. Shows late break with some heavy tilt. Creates a ton of swing and miss, especially to RH bats. Commands it well, and likely will be plus offering long term. Grade: 50

Changeup: 80-83. An above-average offering with late tumbling break and pairs extremely well off of the fastball. Maintains arm speed well and keeps hitters off balance throwing it in any count. Grade: 45

Control and Command: Solid control with all four pitches. Shows tremendous confidence throwing offspeed in any count. Sequences very well by locating the fastball up early and pairing it with the Slider and changeup down in the zone. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: Big time upside with all the fastball/slider combo currently, and the changeup looks to be a budding plus pitch. Curveball progression will be a point of emphasis as he develops but currently stands with at least three above-average pitches. Needs work of mechanics in lower half to get to more command than just control. Head whack and overall delivery present relief risk.
