May 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-3
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2018 Round 13
RuleV: 2021

Physical Description: Listed at 6-3, 225. Big, burly right-hander with thick lower half. No physical projection remaining.

Delivery & Mechanics: Vertical arm slot. A little bit of stiffness in delivery and shorter stride length. Cuts himself off at release and doesn't get over his front hip. Despite fringe athleticism, he repeats fairly well and his arm stroke is actually fairly loose.

Fastball: 90-92 MPH with a bit of backspinning life when he works near the top of the strike zone. Gets a little more of a cutter look at times when he goes glove-side. Grade: 45

Curveball: Short, low-80’s curveball without huge depth or bite. Grade: 40

Slider: Looks to have two distinct breaking balls. Mid-80's slider has a little more horizontal length than the curveball but has two-plane action. Grade: 50

Changeup: 82-84 MPH. Typically average movement but occasionally shows ability to get above-average depth. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Generally works in and around the zone with the fastball. Less consistent at locating offspeed stuff. High arm slot and subpar ability to clear his front hip impede his ability to work east-west and command the ball glove-side. Control: 50 | Command: 45

Overall: Heasley looks like an up-and-down rotation depth piece and/or long reliever. He has a collection of fringe-average pitches and is an OK strike-thrower, although his athletic limitations and high arm slot prevent him from commanding all four quadrants of the strike zone. He has an inning-eater frame, works quickly, and isn't afraid to throw the fastball in the strike zone, which could give him an opportunity to eat some low-leverage innings.
