Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Matt Thompson

Age: 22 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 150 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Broad shouldered, lean, and athletic build with room for positive projection in the coming years. Loose fluid athlete that moves well on the mound.

Delivery & Mechanics: Side step to exaggerated leg kick and moderate hand raise, long strider with above average extension, gets deep into back leg in drive, with trunk tilt toward the first base side. He keeps his operation simple from the stretch, but doesn't engage his back hip quite the same way he does in his full delivery. Three quarters arm action, with a lot of length early in his stroke.

Fastball: Sits low to mid-90s averaging around 93 mph in 2019. Heavily focused on working in the upper quadrants and he will get swings and misses on the pitch. Lands the fastball heavily armside but does show fringe ability to locate gloveside. Good characteristics pairing velocity, a low release point, and efficient spin. It misses bats consistently when located high and this isn't a matter of 94-95 mph overwhelming lower level hitters either. Morillo gets 21.3 IVB on average giving it a plus characteristic. Unfortunately in our viewings Morillo showed fringe average control and below average command of the pitch. A step forward in this area could move this pitch to plus. Grade: 55

Slider: A gyro spin slider with some late dump as it approaches the plate. Middle of the road efficiency leads to slurvy shape. Best secondary weapon, average swing and miss offering, with poor command. His best sliders flash late drop. Good velocity at 86-87 mph on average which makes up for some of the generic movement it gets. Average raw spin at 2550-2600 rpms but a lot of that is gyro. Will miss bats in the minors due to the velocity and ability to play off of his fastball. We have less confidence that's the case as Morillo sees advanced competition. Grade: 40

Changeup: Firm rarely used offering, still a work in progress at the moment, not even fair to call it a third pitch with its infrequent usage. Averages around eight to ten mph of separation from the fastball. Average horizontal movement, but he does a poor job of killing lift. Grade: 30

Control and Command: Below average control profile with poor command. It's realistic to anticipate his fastball control and command improve over time and his slider should follow. Shows little to no confidence in his changeup at the moment and does not throw the pitch with conviction. Below average strike thrower, despite flashes of brilliance where he locates all over the top of the zone. Fastball located in the upper quadrants almost exclusively. Possess enough fastball command to cut it as a reliever. Control: 40 | Command: 30

Overall: There's definitely arm talent present in Morillo's profile. He features a near-plus fastball, above average velocity with perhaps more in the tank. The generic secondaries, below average control, and poor command however make us question the profile long term. Morillo's fastball is a good one, and his delivery has deceptive qualities, but without a true put away secondary it's difficult to envision much success even in relief. He's rule five eligible this year and the organization chose to leave him unprotected. He does possess the type of fastball quality that a team could take a shot on Morillo on the rule five.
