Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 180 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Stocky frame offers a strong range lower half with present strength. Wide shoulders with arms on the shorter side. Frame seems to put on good weight easily. Will likely add as he continues to mature. Not a quick twitch type of athlete, but athletic enough to stick in the middle infield.

Hit: Steps into the box as a right handed hitter with his feet slightly open. Utilizes quiet hands that sit right above the numbers in an upright stance. Small hanging leg kick helps keep his weight back while through the ball. Bat speed is average at best, but bat to ball skills shine through due to an impressive eye at the plate. All fields approach, that slightly leans pull side heavy. Shows ability to identify offspeed well and limited swing and miss to his game, but will likely never post high walk numbers due to a free swinging approach. Grade: 45

Power: Bat path shows potential to tap into above average pull side pop, but lack of true bat speed will hinder the true power profile. Gets out in front of the ball well with above average launch angles but Doesn't produce elite exit velos currently. Does not need to sell out to find pop, so potential for an above average grade as he adds strength is there. Grade: 45

Field: Will show smooth instincts moving in both directions, but short stride and lack of foot speed will limit his range. That said, his ability to get into great positions with his footwork stands out on film. Shows extremely quick hands on transfers and made a few tough double play turns look effortless. He could benefit from being a bit more flexible, as he doesn't bend entirely well at the waste. Profile could push the glove to 2B long term. Grade: 40

Arm: Often fails to step into throws, opting to only rely on his upper body and sapping any true arm strength. Will be accurate on his throws and gets good carry, there's just not much behind it. Likely doesn't possess the arm strength to stay in the left side of the infield long term. Grade: 40

Run: Gets a quick first step out of the box but takes a bit to reach full speed. Takes short, choppy steps in his strides and does not coordinate his upper half into his stride well at all. Advanced baseball IQ and instincts help his speed play up on the base paths, and will likely pick up a handful or steals. Grade: 40

Overall: Primarily a SS throughout his career, but Sosa gives you all the makings of bat first platoon 2B long term. Lack of range and arm strength will be easier to mask at the keystone, and gives his bat a chance to thrive. Has been young for every level he's played, and will only be 21 in likely Hi-A in 2021. If Sosa continues to show this approach, then a role 40 floor is a easy conversation.
