Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Trei Cruz

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 200 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2020 Draft - Round 3
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Large frame, Lean but strong and sturdy build. Toned: noticeable, muscular definition in forearms and solid strength throughout. Impressive athleticism. Modest room for additional growth/gains. Bloodlines: the son of Jose Cruz Jr and grandson of Houston Astros great Jose Cruz Sr.

Hit: Open stance; hands at the head; upright with a narrow base. Above-average bat speed. Quick to and through the ball with a level bat path; swing can get long at times -- yielding swing and miss against above-average or better secondaries. Modest pre-load waggle but relatively quiet; slight stride assisted toe tap timing mechanism and quick trigger. Contact oriented approach with a respectable amount of power. Aims to put the ball into play without sacrificing power. More than enough polish to handle the lower to mid-levels of minor league ball. Continued development with pitch recognition and improved consistency with driving the ball will be important moving forward. Grade: 40

Power: Bat speed and leverage in swings indicates future average power; Barrel control indicates an inconsistency in barreling up for power; however, can handle wood. Pitch recognition will need to develop in order to hit for power consistently. Line drive, gap hit type. Grade: 40

Field: Solid average fielder - good defensive habits. Clean and quick footwork; soft hands with solid transfers and good range that can play up anywhere in the infield. The game speeds up on him at times; errant throws and misreads on semi-difficult hops. Pro instruction should clear up some of these minor deficiencies, yielding an adequate and capable defender. Grade: 50

Arm: Arm strength is average, inaccurate throws, and inconsistent release make it a borderline fringy tool. Enough arm to handle the left side; could see him benefiting from a move to second base. Grade: 45

Run: Smooth runner out of the box, average speed. Playable speed for his position with good instincts on the basepaths. Grade: 50

Overall: Fringe-average to average parts that could evolve into a solid utility or role player. Comes out to play and his versatility and bloodlines will help him wherever Detroit decides to play him. If he can barrel up the ball consistently, he could surpass a 40 hit tool and tap into the raw power that he has.

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-1
Weight: 190 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2019 Round 15
RuleV: 2022

Physical Description: Strong build. Square shoulders. Thick, barrel chested. Muscular thighs and legs. Future strength gains minimal.

Delivery & Mechanics: Throws from a high 3/4 arm-slot; Starts with his glove near his face, raises his left leg near chest and plants it forward as he strides to the plate. Long arm action. Utilizes his height for max extension on his pitches that allows for some deception. Good balance on follow-through.

Fastball: Sits at 92-95 touching 97. Throws downhill. Natural tail and sink. Whip-like with riding life at upper end of velocity. Airs it out. Grade: 55

Curveball: Late, sharp bite. Throws with velocity. Potential difference maker with more pro instruction. Grade: 50

Control and Command: Freeman can pound the zone with his fastball and shows he can climb the ladder. Will need to throw the curveball consistently in the zone. Shows well below-average command at present. Control: 30 | Command: 30

Overall: Freeman's fastball and curve will carry him through the low minors but will need to continue to work on consistency and command as he is prone to wildness. Quite the find in the 15th round for Chicago. He has very good work ethic that should carry him far.

Evaluator: Rogelio Castillo

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-4
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2013 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Tall, large frame. Broad Shoulders. Thick, barrel chested; Powerful upper body, has gained significant mass.

Hit: Wide stance; hands at the head; slight crouch with knee bend as he loads up to swing. A small amount of rocking and forth in the batter's box. As he swings, there is a slight front leg lick. Has loft in his swing and can go to all fields. Can get pull-happy. Swings for power. Grade: 45

Power: Drives the ball to all fields. Natural loft power as his swing ideally for power. Ball jumps off bat. Swing plane for power to all fields. His best tool. Grade: 55

Field: Solid average fielder - good defensive habits. Sound defensive actions. Good first step read for a player his size. Reliable fielder. With the added size, right-field is the idea location for him to play. Grade: 50

Arm: Live arm, works right and this was before his elbow surgery. Very good arm strength for the position. Will prevent extra bases with his arm. Grade: 60

Run: Below-average but capable. Enough for the position. Grade: 40

Overall: Adolfo has a power ceiling that is unlimited when healthy. The mass gain has helped him tap into his power. He has one of the strongest arms in the organization and still a treat, post elbow surgery. If he can cut back on his strikeouts, the White Sox will have another power bat in their lineup.

Evaluator: Rogelio Castillo

Age: 23 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 160 lbs
Hits/Throws: R/R
Acquired: 2014 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Strong, well built with square shoulders. Muscular thighs and legs. Not body type to add much weight or strength.

Delivery & Mechanics: Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Starts from the stretch comes to the set; high to max effort, rears back slightly before he goes to the plate. Hand break, modest leg kick yields some deception. Long, loose arm action. Repeats delivery consistently.

Fastball: Sits at 93-96 t98. Modest arm-side run and sink. Swing and misses come in the zone due to overpowering, not movement. Effective when making hitters chase high in the zone. Riding life at the upper end of velocity can be flat at times. Grade: 55

Slider: Sits at 79-83 Caught between a slider and curve, De Los Santos is inconsistent with throwing the pitch but can hit the corners on lefties. Will be an effective pitch; Bites when he stays on top. Grade: 50

Control and Command: De Los Santos has fringe-average control and below-average command of his pitches. His fastball can hit the corners well but tends to open up, allowing the ball to miss the target. Can spot the slider on the corners but the pitch can be flat and stay in the zone. He may end up just going with a curve instead. Control: Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: De Los Santos is currently pitching in the Dominican Republic Winter League as he continues to get innings under his arm since coming back from Tommy John surgery in 2019. Needs to have a better command of his two-pitch offering if he is going to stick in a bullpen. Slider shows glimpses of a good pitch when consistent.

Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall, large frame. Wide shoulders; Strong, well built. Muscular thighs and legs. Can handle more weight. Built like a power forward. Still has room to grow a bit.

Delivery & Mechanics: Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Starts from the stretch with his back facing the first base side and drives his front front towards home. Long, loose arm action. Hand break, small leg kick. Repeats delivery consistently; Slight head wack after delivery; Occasionally flies open.

Curveball: Primary secondary offering; 82-84 with 11/5 shape. Can spin it with desired bite. Will be an effective pitch as he gains consistency and feel. Has the early ingredients of a solid average power curve. Grade: 50

Changeup: Lacks feel; occasionally slows arm speed, guiding it to the plate. A work in progress that needs consistency and further pro instruction. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Repeats delivery. Down in the zone but doesn't miss many bats. Curve has potential to be plus pitch as he learns command and sequencing. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: He is listed as a starter however his 6-5 frame and his delivery suggests he may end up in the backend of a bullpen. As he continues to mature, there is potential for his curve and fastball to get better. Command and control will need to improve to stay in a starting role.

Hit: Upright stance; feet shoulder-width with his hands with the bat just above the letters near his helmet. Slight bat wiggle before he swings raises front foot slightly into a small stride. Average bat speed with a lofty swing. Can look off-balance on a good off-speed offering, struggles to barrel up consistently. Sprays ball; Geared to pull. Grade: 45

Power: Strength for power but not with current approach. The swing plane for power is there for all fields but has not shown it consistently yet. Currently grades for gap power. Grade: 40

Field: Solid average fielder - good defensive habits. Tracks the ball well. Quick first step read. Gets to the ball. Speed carries him on defense. Grade: 50

Arm: Flashes average arm strength, Hits cut off with a quick release, Playable in CF or LF. Grade: 50

Run: Smooth runner out of the box, type of speed that makes the defensive rush. Makes things happen. Gets good leads. Excel acceleration. Playable speed for his position with good instincts on the bases. Stealing bases is a big part of his game. The best weapon he has to offer. Grade: 55

Overall: Your typical CF prospect with plus speed and good instincts in the field. Needs to continue to figure out his swing if it's going to be geared for power or gap contact. His speed will provide value once he figures out how to hit against a higher level of competition.

Physical Description: Athletic build; Wide shoulders with a long, thin waist. Muscular thighs and legs. Big hands. Not body type to add much weight or strength. Built like a wide receiver.

Delivery & Mechanics: Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Starts from the stretch with his back facing the first base side and drives his front front towards home. Long, loose arm action. Hand break, modest leg kick. Repeats delivery consistently; Balance throughout his delivery.

Fastball: Sits at 95-98 t100 with modest life in the zone. Throws downhill with natural tail & sink; Riding life at upper end of velocity. Whip-like life. His best pitch. Grade: 50

Slider: Primary secondary offering; 82-84. Fair bite. Does not use it much. Still learning, Caught in between CB and SL with some break. Grade: 50

Changeup: Lacks feel for pitch; Needs further development. Needs to develop to complement FB. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Commands FB both sides of the plate. Shows good control just a few seasons removed from playing shortstop. He can challenge hitters inside with his fastball. Slider needs to develop more in order to be a consistent second pitch. Flashes a changeup but have not seen it enough to be a consistent third pitch. Control: 55 | Command: 50

Overall: This is a very live arm that could be a steal for the Pirates. Continued development of his slider and changeup could make him a front tier starter. He is only 20 years old so he has time to develop those pitches to complement a very good plus fastball. Current sequencing of his two pitches could also put him as a high leverage reliever. He is new to pitching so he is extremely raw and could get better as he moves through their system.

RuleV: 2023

Physical Description: Small, compact frame with muscular thighs and legs. Rounded shoulders. Not likely to add much weight, physicality is limited based on frame. Strong, muscular, and athletic in a diminutive package.

Hit: Slightly open stance; hands at the head; slight crouch with knee bend as he loads up to swing. Plus bat speed. Very quick to and through the ball with a bat path conducive for square hitting over backspin. Stays through the ball in the zone with good barrel control. Generates loud bat speed, fluid stroke with good barrel control. Slight stride assisted toe tap timing mechanism and quick trigger. Contact oriented approach. Power: Bat speed and leveraged swings indicates future average power. Does have a track record of above average power production as na amteur. Drives the ball with hip turn through the swing.
