Dec 2020 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 182 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2015 IFA
RuleV: Eligible

Physical Description: Tall, broad shouldered and still lanky. Plenty of positive projection remains in the frame. Longer levers, high waisted, and somewhat athletic.

Hit: Very upright batting stance. Hands by ear bat resting slightly downward over back shoulder. Toe tap trigger with steep bat angle, quiet load. Not a ton of power present at point of contact as Lao is still learning to drive the ball. Can get passive at times, and overly aggressive at others. Some in-zone swing and miss as well leading to a below average hit tool projection long term. Does show the ability to take a walk and typically takes a lot of pitches per plate appearances working deep into counts. Grade: 40

Power: Easy power from both sides of the plate. Swing path with natural loft is conducive for flyball contact and rocket liners. Plus raw in batting practice to all fields. Pole to pole power, he can get to in games, but not yet with consistency. There's plenty of positive physical projection in the frame and enough approach and bat to ball skill to foresee more game power coming. Grade: 55

Field: Will play multiple spots in the dirt but most at home at the corners. Below average defensive third baseman. Average hands and actions but poor lateral movement. Has enough range to be an asset at first base long term, but will need to improve instincts around the bag. Grade: 40

Arm: Below average arm overall, will make throws but inconsistent mechanics and lacks zip. Accuracy is lacking at times, but overall he hits his target. Likely to settle at first base long term sure to his lack of arm strength. Grade: 40

Run: Above average runner, should slow down with age. Quicker out the box than you'd expect and moves well on the bases. Good jump and first step as a base stealer. While not a major part of his game he has the ability to catch batteries sleeping. Grade: 50

Overall: A potential power hitting corner infielder with some room for growth both physically and developmentally who's a long ways away. Good physicality with the ability to add strength and push his power into plus territory. Needs to improve ability to adjust to breaking balls and offspeed to truly maximize his offensive potential. Long term a first base profile, good enough hands and actions for an everyday role there should the bat warrant it. Wild card platoon profile at the moment with the ability to jump into a fringe everyday profile in the coming years. His early rule five eligibility in 2020 makes him more difficult to project.
