Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Ian Smith

Age: 26 yr
Height: 6-6
Weight: 225 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/L
Acquired: 2016 Draft - Round 4, CIN
RuleV: On 40-man

Physical Description: Long frame that's fully maxed out on projection. Simple over the top delivery that he repeats well. Gets plus extension leading to a low release point that creates an impressive vertical approach angle.

Delivery & Mechanics: Big frame, long limbs that allow him to get plus extension down the mound. Works third base side of the rubber, most likely to account for his cross-stride and the immense amounts of run he gets on his fastball. Rock and fire motion. Throws from a true 3/4 arm slot that can be tough on left handers. Could incorporate his lower half better in his delivery to help with issues with his cross stride.

Fastball: Sitting 90-93, and able to run it up to 95 early in outings. Spin rate comes in around 2,400, giving him above-average spin even though the velocity itself isn't above average. Creates a flat approach on delivery pairs with plus vertical break. Struggles to command up in the zone but does get swings and misses in the zone with it, so it seems to play better than the velocity suggests. Grade: 55

Slider: A low-80s offering that shows tight spin with late horizontal break. Can leave it over the middle of the plate on occasion but shows the makings on potentially a plus pitch. Grade: 45

Changeup: Low to mid-80s that dies at the plate with below-average command of the pitch. Holds arm speed well and could be an above-average pitch in spurts. Needs to get more comfortable throwing the pitch. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Average control of the fastball throughout outings and fringy command, which is troubling because he works off the heater most often. Shows less feel for his offspeed. Can show impressive strike-throwing ability in small samples but loses it more in long outings. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Moss has the body of a starter and shows some feel for spin, but the secondary offerings profile as fringe-average to average at best, and he doesn't have above average command or control to fall back on. He can get swings and misses with the fastball and slider, but his stuff doesn't hold in long outings. More efficient mechanics are needed to makeup for his cross-body motion in order to improve the ability to throw strikes consistently. The profile does lend itself to being an interesting FB/SL relief option.
