Physical Description: Tall, large frame. Long limbs. Tapering leg with some muscular build. Loose, fluid arms. Has strength and some size. Mostly filled out, but some room for continued strength development.
Hit: Square stance. Hands at the letters, has lowered recently. Minor hand load with barrel wrap, lots of torque in swing. Average size leg kick timing mechanism. Above-average bat speed on an uppercut path. Has reworked swing to smooth out swing path. History of flyball approach, but new swing leads to more line drives. Pull-side approach. Barrel lags through zone, ball jumps off bat. Aggressive hitter. Chases too many pitches out of zone. Lots of swing and miss. Needs to improve pitch recognition. Going to struggle against upper-level pitching. Needs adjustment to swing and approach. Grade: 30
Power: Eye popping double plus raw power, game power plays more above-average due to swing and miss. Ball jumps off bat. Has ability to hit them high and far. Can hit them out to all parts of the park. Still has HR power with new line drive approach. Needs to make more contact to fully tap into power, but still an above-average power bat. Grade: 55
Field: Solid defender. Athletic. Will make routine play. Catches what he gets to. Ability to cover some ground. Moves well both ways. Doesn't always look smooth, but gets jobs done. Jumps and reads could improve. Inefficient routes at times. Needs some development but should be playable in RF. Grade: 55
Arm: Long arm action with fairly good mechanics. Looks to throw, charges ball hard. Strong arm, carry through the bag. Usually on target. Can throw out runners. Easily playable in RF. Grade: 70
Run: Average runner. Long strides with ability to accelerate well. Not a threat to steal a base, but can go first to third. Good athlete. Shows some burst in outfield. Allows him to cover decent amount of ground. Grade: 50
Overall: The excessive amount of swing and miss is concerning for Matias. He's never going to be a hitter that hits for average, but he does need to make more contact to have a chance to succeed. He needs to continue to overhaul his swing and improve his pitch recognition skills, in order to make enough contact to allow his power to play. That is his carrying tool. Matias possesses double-plus raw power with the ability to hit them high and far. For now, it only plays at above-average because of the contact issues, but there is potential for even more game power. Defensively, he is a solid defender that should be able to play right field. His average speed allows him to cover some ground and he catches what he gets to. Matias has a double-plus arm that is strong and accurate. The power and arm get your intention and make Matias' potential very enticing. He has some holes in the swing and will need to continue to develop his approach if he wants any chance of hitting advanced pitching. Overall, he has the potential to be an below-average power bat that provides some intrigue on the defensive side, but needs to improve hit tool to have a chance in the upper minor leagues.
