RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Strong, well built. Slightly heavy through mid-section. Strong legs. Fair upper body muscular development. Athletic. Not body type to add much more weight or strength.

Delivery & Mechanics: Semi-windup. Slight drop and drive. 3/4 arm slot with short, quick arm action. Moderate effort delivery, uses athleticism well. Solid deception due to crossfire and arm action. Limited extension. Fluid and athletic motions that are repeated fairly well.

Fastball: Sit 93-96 mph, can touch 98 mph. Easy velocity, maintains throughout. Good riding life, ball jumps on hitters. Decent control, wavers at times. Below-average command, but flashes ability to throw to both sides of plate. Swing and misses ability due to velocity and deception. Grade: 60

Curveball: Sits 78-81 mph. Big, sweeping break. Bites when on top. Will get loopy, back up at times. Fringe-average control, below-average command. Leaves over the plate too often. Potential out pitch with more consistency. Grade: 45

Changeup: Sits 87-91 mph. Sinking action with some arm side run. Slows arm speed and delivery. Commands well, down in the zone frequently. Not afraid to throw early in count. Poor velocity separation. Needs further development but flashes potential. Grade: 40

Control and Command: Stays around zone, but misses spots frequently. Crossfire leads to lack of consistent command with all pitches. Leaves fastball and curveball over the plate too often, gets hit hard. Control wavers as he gets deeper in game. Control: 45 | Command: 40

Overall: Diaz's fastball is easily his best pitch. It sits in the mid-90's and can reach 98 at times. He generates easy velocity with an athletic motion and quick arm action. The ball jumps on hitters and produces whiffs. His curveball shows the ability to be an out pitch but lacks consistency. It'll back up on him when he doesn't get on top and will get hit hard. The changeup shows flashes but lacks velocity separation and deception. He shows the ability to control it but needs to improve arm speed consistency to get more swing and misses. Diaz is around the zone with all three offerings most of the time but needs to be better at commanding them. He leaves the ball over the plate too often and as the game goes on his control starts to waver. There is a lot to like about Diaz's fastball but his command and offspeed pitches are going to need to be more consistent if he wants to have an impact at the big league level. He'll likely be in a spot starter or long relief role down the line.
