Apr 2021 Report

Evaluator: Anthony Franco

Age: 24 yr
Height: 6-2
Weight: 235 lbs
Hits/Throws: L/R
Acquired: 2015 Round 3
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Listed at 6-2, 235. Muscular upper body; barrel-chested with sculpted shoulders and forearms. Physically maxed out but already more than strong enough for MLB.

Hit: Open stance, hands set up pretty low. Leg kick as timing mechanism. Handsy swing; creates pretty good whip and bat speed. Below-average bat control. Not particularly loose or athletic swing with visible head movement. Struggles to cover pitches at the upper part of the strike zone, especially on the inner half. Fringy strike zone feel; has a tendency to pull off soft stuff on the outer half. Grade: 40

Power: Strength-driven bat speed and above-average raw power. Has the physicality and bat path to drive pitches down and in with elevation and authority to the pull side. Bat control issues that plague the hit tool likely also to limit the overall power output; despite having the strength to drive pitches pole-to-pole, limited ability to cover different areas of the strike zone likely cap game power to mistake pitches. Grade: 45

Field: Limited first step and lateral quickness for second base. Has rather significant minor-league experience at each of second base, third base and in left field. Figures to serve a roving role off the bench. Grade: 45

Arm: Adequate but unspectacular arm strength. Grade: 50

Run: Moves well for his size once underway. Grade: 45

Overall: Blankenhorn's limitations on both sides of the ball probably keep him from playing an everyday role. He has enough bat speed and loft to hit for some power to his pull side, and has enough athleticism to moonlight at a few positions on the diamond. Blankenhorn has mashed up through Double-A and is an MLB-ready lefty bench piece. Brad Miller is a better pure hitter (and thus likely a better overall player), but that's the sort of profile/role Blankenhorn should have.
