Jan 2021 Report

Evaluator: Geoff Pontes

Age: 21 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2016 IFA
RuleV: On 40-Man Roster

Physical Description: Average build, sloped shoulders, lean wiry strength. Has added around 15 to 20 pounds of muscle since the time his listed weight was taken. Strong, athletic build, should avoid bulk or poor conditioning as he ages. Underwent Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2019.

Hit: Switch hitter, looks more natural from the right side of the plate. Similar setup from each side, square to the pitcher, hands set by back shoulder, slight leg lift trigger. Above average bat speed, left handed swing added loft and angle at the point of contact over the course of the last few seasons. Already possessed an above average baseline of contact skills and zone awareness. The improved contact quality at the alternate site push this grade to firm average territory. Grade: 50

Power: The last time we saw Antuna in an affiliated game it was nearly three years ago. Since that time Antuna has made adjustments to his swing, added strength, and subsequently took a significant step forward in the power department. Ability to hit for impact is already present based on performance at Fredericksburg. The swing has developed into a quick cut with a lofty angular plane, as he looks to drive the ball to his pullside from both sides of the plate. Above average power, that should play in games when we see Antuna again in 2021. Grade: 50

Field: Versatile defender with the ability to play multiple positions within the infield. Average range to possibly a tick better. Good first step and natural infield actions. Hands can get choppy at times, but his turns and pivots are smooth and well timed. Natural infielder, can fit at third, second, or shortstop in a pinch. Best positions are third and second long term. Grade: 50

Arm: Not fully certain that arm strength has come all the way back after TJS. Had an above average arm prior to the surgery that played on the left side of the diamond. At worst if he loses some strength should settle in as an average thrower should he maintain accuracy that was present pre-injury. Grade: 50

Run: Average runner in terms of straight line speed, and home to first run times. Below average base stealer with poor jumps, likely to get the red light long term. Should be a better than station to station runner on the bases. Fringe average run. Grade: 45

Overall: A versatile infielder with a promising bat that combines contact skills, a discerning eye, and blossoming power at the plate. A true potential breakout candidate in the 2021 and a player with several paths to everyday playing time. Some questions loom around his recovery from TJS and the alternate site power production playing in minor league games in 2021. If Antuna can answer those questions he could push for a major league job as early as late 2021. A 40 man spot and a summer at the alternate site have put the once high dollar international signing in a position to succeed.
