Nov 2020 Report

Evaluator: Jake Kerns

Age: 19 yr
Height: 6-0
Weight: 170 lbs
Hits/Throws: S/R
Acquired: 2019 Draft - Round 2
RuleV: 2024

Physical Description: Slight frame that has plenty of room to fill out. Athletic. Listed at 6'0" but appears shorter. Has some baseball bloodlines.

Hit: A natural righty that began switch hitting as an amateur. Slightly crouched stance from both sides. Big leg kick as he loads. Uses his whole body to generate above-average or better bat speed. Level swing. Attacks the ball. Above-average eye on pitches out of the zone, but has some trouble with offspeed stuff and pitches away. Swing can get long. He's also overaggressive at the plate which contributed to a high strikeout rate in 2019. Flashes an ability and desire to lay down a bunt on occasion. Grade: 40

Power: Possesses average raw power from both sides, but inconsistently gets to it. Ball jumps off the bat if he makes good contact but it is generally to the gaps. Needs to become stronger and tone down the swing to better impact the ball. Creates good leverage but overaggressiveness and lack of strength hinder his power output. Tries to kill the ball and it often leads to popups. Grade: 40

Field: Fluid actions in the field. Good footwork. Stays low and keeps the ball in front of him. Moves well to his left and right. Good instincts and gets to the ball. Above-average range. Overall package suggests he can stay at SS. Grade: 55

Arm: Quick transfer and release but only average arm strength. On-line carry to 1B. Adept at getting the ball to 2B. Makes the routine plays. Grade: 50

Run: Quick out of the box and shows above average times to 1B from both sides. Has demonstrated an ability to steal in his short career. Grade: 55

Overall: Valdes possesses some impressive tools, but his ultimate success depends on his bat. He will need to grow stronger and tone down his approach at the plate, but if he does so, he has regular upside. That's a big ask, however.
